the things were in her bag,â Violet said.
âTrue,â Jessie said, âbut Kristie has been acting very strange lately.â
âKristie has been acting kind of strange,â Violet agreed, âbut I think itâs because she didnât really want to enter the contest in the first place.â
âWhat about the man in the baseball cap?â Benny said. âHe always seems to be around when something has gone wrong.â
âYes,â Violet said, âbut he hasnât been entered in any of the contests.â
âBut he sure acts suspiciously,â Jessie said.
âMaybe if we see him tomorrow we can follow him,â Henry said.
âI can help you follow him,â Benny offered. âIâll be very quiet so he wonât know Iâm around.â
âThis Iâd like to see,â Jessie said as she smiled at her noisy younger brother.
âI sure wish I knew who that girl was Kris-tie saw in the art tent,â Violet said.
âWhen we see Kristie tomorrow maybe we can ask her again,â Henry said.
âSpeaking of tomorrow,â Jessie said, âweâd better go to bed now. The livestock show starts early in the morning. And weâve got a mystery to solve.â
The next morning, as the children were getting ready to leave for the fair, the phone rang.
âAlden residence,â Jessie said. She listened quietly for a moment, then she said, âOh, Iâm sorry to hear that, Courtney. Tell Michael I hope he feels better soon. Iâll call you after the fair and tell you everything that happened.â
âIs something wrong?â Violet asked.
âMichael isnât feeling well this morning,â Jessie said. âCourtney says they wonât be able to go to the fair with us today because she has to baby-sit Michael.â
âThatâs too bad,â Henry said. âWe were all having so much fun.â
âWe sure were,â Violet agreed. âI hope Michael feels well enough to come to Grandfatherâs birthday party tomorrow.â
âCourtney said that sheâs going to make sure Michael stays in bed all day today,â Jessie said. âHe should feel better by tomorrow.â
âI hope so,â Benny said. âWhy donât we make him a get-well card when we get home?â
âThatâs a wonderful idea, Benny,â Violet said. âWe can make a card for Grandfatherâs birthday, too.â
âWell, weâd better hurry if weâre going to get to the fair before it starts,â Jessie said.
âAnd get back in time to buy Grandfatherâs birthday gift,â Henry said.
The children ran as fast as they could to the fairgrounds. The livestock show was just starting when they arrived.
âI love the livestock show!â Benny said.
âI love this show, too,â Violet said. âThe animals are so beautiful.â
âThe parade is about to begin,â Henry said.
âLadies, gentlemen, boys, and girls,â the announcer said. âWelcome to the Greenfield County Livestock Show! Now we will begin the animal promenade, after which the animals will be on display in the livestock tent. See if you can pick the winner of the Best of Show ribbon and the $25 cash prize! Good luck, everyone!â
The crowd began to cheer as the parade began. Children and adults marched into the arena with their animals beside them. Horses, sheep, goats, cows, and pigs, some with bright ribbons tied around their necks, walked alongside their owners. They mooed, baaed, and squealed noisily as they paraded around and around the ring.
âLook at that little horse,â Benny said. âI could ride that one.â
âThatâs a pony, Benny,â Violet said. âLook at all the pretty ribbons tied in its mane.â
âItâs beautiful,â Jessie said. âAnd so well trained.â
The pony obediently pranced beside its owner, a
