Tori turned to Evan. She tucked her hair behind her ear. âYou sure youâre okay? I havenât seen you do that in a while. Not since youâve been home, anyway.â
âAnd you didnât exactly see me much before that.â
âNo, it was kind of hard with you living in Longview and me living in San Francisco.â She smiled at him. âIâm so glad weâre both here now. But Iâm still surprised you made the move. I thought you liked living independently, away from all of us.â
âAs much as you did, probably. Why did you come home?â
âBecause of The Alex. Because of Alex âwhat he did. And then Sean.â She shook her head and blew out a breath. âMy life has turned completely upside down in the past year.â
âYeah, it has.â
She cocked her head to the side. âHas yours?â
He picked up the used glasses and took them over to the sink area, dumping leftover wine down the drain. âI guess.â
She brought more glasses and set them by the sink, then opened the dishwasher and started loading them into the racks, which had been designed specifically for wineglasses. âDoes Alex dying have anything to do with you coming home?â
He went around and picked up more glasses. âI suppose. Youâre all coming back and working on the monastery. I felt like I should, too.â
âNot all of us,â she said, taking over dumping the wine and then loading the glasses in the dishwasher. âHayden left, and I doubt Liam will ever come back.â
âYou have a point. But Hayden will be back when his internshipâs done. Iâm sure heâll open the next best winery in the valley.â
âYouâre probably right.â She leaned her hip against the counter. âYouâve never said whether youâve gotten your letter from Alex.â
âNo.â
âHave you?â He sensed the intensity in her question. Sheâd been so upset when sheâd had to wait for her letter. Alex hadnât intended her to have it for a whole year, but Evan had demanded Aubrey give it to her last fall, when Toriâs life had basically imploded from grief and guilt.
He hadnât wanted to tell anyone that heâd gotten his letter. Theyâd only ask what was in it, and he couldnât share what Alex had asked of him. Not until Evan had done it. But since she was asking him point-blank, he didnât see a reason to lie. Whoa, now he was thinking about whether or not to withhold information. Maybe he was as together as Alaina said. Cool. âYes. Aubrey brought it to me last March.â
âShe brought it to you? In Longview?â Tori folded her arms over her chest. âWhyâd you get yours so fast when Alex was going to make me wait a year?â
Evan arched a brow at her. âDidnât he say something in your letter about perspective?â
âYes.â She finished putting the last of the glasses in the dishwasher. She dropped a soap pellet into the compartment on the door and closed it. âWill you tell me what he wrote?â
Evan went around and recorked the bottles. He still wasnât ready to reveal the part about the novel. The same went for his new job. âIt was relatively short, actually. He told me to take care of you.â He flicked her an apologetic glance. âI shouldâve done better.â
âDonât beat yourself up. I wasnât letting anyone help me. Even if youâd been here, I likely wouldâve pushed you away along with everyone else. I was such a head case. And kind of a bitch, too, probably.â She turned to program the dishwasher to start.
âDonât beat yourself up either,â Evan said. âOur brother killed himself. Youâre entitled to deal with it however you can.â
âWell, that was my problem. I didnât deal with it.â She turned and leaned back against the dishwasher.
