deliberately avoided cutting into
it. I pulled on my yoga pants and new red jumper and padded downstairs and went
into the kitchen.
    ‘You’re
up,’ he smiled. ‘Did you sleep?’
    ‘Yes, like
a log. It smells good in here. What are you doing?’
    ‘Making a
chilli for the four of us. Lexi put everything in the saucepan for me. She’s in
the games room with Doug on the Xbox again, she’s determined to beat him. It’s
nearly ready, but I can’t drain the rice one handed.’
    ‘I’ll do it
and I’ll set the table too.’
    ‘Nice
jumper, you look good in red,’ he smiled. I gave him a loving kiss and squeezed
his bottom, set the table and called Lexi and Doug in, then helped Gabe drain
and plate up. The four of us enjoyed dinner with just the one bottle of wine,
which I passed on. I filled up my glass with water and saw Gabe smile at me. I
ate one handed with my other on his thigh and gave it a squeeze as I stood up
to clear our plates. We decided on Star Trek Into Darkness as our movie
of choice and Lexi and I took down a mini tub of B&J’s and a small bar of
chocolate. Lexi beat me to the back row and pulled out her tongue.
    ‘Gabe, will
it hurt you if I curl up and put my head in your lap?’ I asked.
    ‘I don’t
think so, it’s standing, sitting and deep breaths that hurt. Try it.’
    I lay down,
tucked my legs up and put my head down and he smiled at me. It was nice to feel
some body contact with him, even it was just my cheek on his thigh. He put his
arm around me and I grabbed his hand and peppered it with kisses, until he ran
his finger along my lips, then put it up my jumper and stroked my stomach. He
only stopped when he needed a drink. I giggled every time I heard Lexi and Doug
sucking each other’s faces off and wondered if that was what Gabe and I sounded
like.
    ‘I want to
watch this Alan Partridge one. You two up for it?’ asked Lexi as Star Trek ended.
    ‘I better
pass, sorry Lex,’ replied Gabe. ‘All that laughing’s going to hurt my ribs too
much and I’m pretty tired. I think I’ll head up to bed if you don’t mind. Stay
and enjoy it Mia, you laughed so much last time.’
    ‘No, it’s
ok.’ I signalled with my eyes to Lexi and Doug kissing again on the back row
and he smiled. ‘I’m really tired too Gabe, and you’ll need a hand undressing.
Sorry to leave you guys, enjoy the film if you can stop kissing long enough to
watch it.’ I smiled at them as they broke apart looking embarrassed. ‘Lex,
don’t forget we’re studying in the morning, we need to leave at nine-thirty.’
    ‘Eh?’ she
asked looking confused.
    ‘That extra
study I need for that special project.’ I gave her a stare. I had my
first pole dancing lesson and I needed to make sure Gabe wouldn’t worry if he
thought I was out and about on my own.
    ‘O right,
the special project, sure.’
    ‘I’ll give
you a lift in girls, Mrs. Darby’s coming at nine to keep an eye on Gabe in the
morning,’ offered Doug.
    ‘I’m not a
bloody child, I can be left on my own you know,’ retorted Gabe.
    ‘Doug,
that’s really sweet of you but Lexi and I can take a taxi to save you going in.’
    ‘No, I
insist. Nine-thirty and I’ll be good to go.’
    I looked at
Lexi and raised my eyebrows and she just shrugged her shoulders. Damn it, that
meant I’d have to ask Doug to go via Peppers first and he was crap at keeping
secrets. Gabe tugged my hand and we headed upstairs. He didn’t need any help,
but I helped him undress none the less. I wasn’t missing any chance to see his
body and touch it. I helped him adjust his sling and kissed his chest and ran
my fingers over the huge ugly purple bruise on his side then the long scar on
his shoulder.
    ‘How’s your
shoulder feeling now?’
    ‘It still
hurts. It’s weird, like I can feel my bones aching inside, but it’s not killing
me anymore. It’s just hard having to sleep on my back all the time.’
    ‘How many
weeks until I can give you a proper hug and
