came true.â
âMy wish, too,â Julie said faintly. But strangely, Markus Duvallâs death didnât give her much satisfaction. It couldnât undo what heâd done to Parker.
Julie shut off the car as they pulled up in front of Avaâs house and glanced worriedly at her friend. âAre you sure you want to go in there right now? We can skip it.â
Parker nodded. âIâm fine. Really.â
Julie gave her hand a reassuring squeeze. âWell, if you get uncomfortable, we can leave, okay? And itâs movie night in my room tonight. Your choice. Even something with Ben Affleck.â
They got out of the car and started up the walk. Just before they could ring the bell, the door swung open. Avaâs stepmother, Leslie, stood in the foyer. Her eyes were cold, the corners of her mouth turned down, and she swayed back and forth. When the wind shifted, Julie could smell white wine on her breath.
â More of you,â she said bitterly, looking at Julie and Parker with disdain. âEveryoneâs in her bedroom. Please try not to trash the place, okay?â
Julie just nodded, but Parker glared at the woman, puffing up her chest. âActually, I was planning on setting fire to the house, thanks. And maybe doing heroin in your bathroom. That cool?â
â Parker! â Julie said, elbowing her. Parker was never great with authority figures. Her dad used to prey on that.
Avaâs stepmother looked from girl to girl, clearly irritated. â Who are you again?â she asked, her words slightly slurred.
âCome on,â Julie said, grabbing Parkerâs arm and dragging her upstairs. No wonder Ava bitched about that woman. She had the demeanor of a snake ready to strike.
Upstairs, Avaâs door was ajar. Ava sat on her bed, while Caitlin and Mac were sprawled on the floor. Everyone looked stricken, but Avaâs beautiful face was a teary mess.
Julie gave her a tight hug. âAre you okay?â
Ava shrugged, grabbing a Kleenex. âNot really. What about you ? I havenât seen you in school since that horrible email.â She looked Julie over, then smiled and flicked Julieâs chandelier earrings. âThose are pretty.â
Julie ducked her head. âThanks. And Iâm . . . getting there,â she said quietly. âI might even go back to school soon.â That was thanks to Carson, of course. Heâd bolstered her so much she actually thought she could face the onslaught.
âYou should totally come back,â Caitlin said gently. âDonât let âem see you sweat. And weâll support you.â
âThatâs right,â Mac echoed. âWeâll be with you every step of the way.â
Julie wanted to hug all of them. In the terrible pain ofher secret getting out, this knowledgeâthat she had new friends, girls she had barely known just weeks ago, who wouldnât judge herâfelt like a gift. Whatever happened, they had one anotherâs backs. They were in this together.
Ava shut her bedroom door firmly behind them, and they all stared at one another for a moment. Then Caitlin took a deep breath. âSo. Alex .â
âI canât believe it.â Julie looked at Ava. âYou were really there when he was arrested?â
Ava nodded, looking tormented. âThey dragged him out of the house and shoved him into the car. It was brutal.â
âSo do you think he . . . did it?â Julie asked Ava cautiously.
Ava pulled her bottom lip into her mouth. âNo way. He wouldnât stab anyone.â
Mac cleared her throat. âBut what about this?â She pulled up a website on her phone. A newscaster from the local station appeared on the screen. â The newest suspect in the Granger murder case, Alex Cohen, has a history of violence, â the reporter said in a grave voice. â We spoke to Lewis Petrovsky, a student who knew Alex at his old school in
