problem or Didi’s fault?
Didi glared at Paula, making Rachelle hope the stick would get shoved down or something.  “You’ve got other students, Teach.  This one’s in my classroom. Hop in, Rachelle.”
Rachelle climbed into the back of the truck, leaving the smug priss to swallow that bitter pill.

Paula stared in dread as Didi— not her real name —sauntered up to the truck and slipped into the passenger seat with a devil-may-care grin on her face. Cody did nothing more than click a remote to open the garage door, climb into the truck, and start it up.  That poor, misguided girl sneered at Paula as the truck drove out and the door closed behind them.
Paula wanted to scream bloody murder, but she prayed hard that that vicious killer and her gruff disciple wouldn’t let that precious youth meet the same fate as Clarissa’s late fiancé. She wanted to snatch that girl’s wrist and lead her to class, but she couldn’t get past the fear of what that killer would do about it.
Somewhere in the distance, someone made a breakfast announcement.  Her stomach was too full of fear to leave any room for food. She had already spent the past hour mulling Didi’s real name around her head with increasing alarm; a murderer who just took a teenager to face the dead masses that claimed her poor Adam. A young, innocent, and impressionable young girl who idolized that—
    Oh, my God .
Paula fumed at the thought of that monster with the face of an angel— no, a succubus . That’s what a demon wearing a pretty face was.
A few passing teenagers snapped Paula out of her stupor to again remind her that breakfast was about to be served. Yes, she needed to go there.  Sean would be there. Then she could relay the devastating news that Pepe was right all along. Not Didi … D.D.

“You got us saddled up with the fuckin’ Death Doll ?” Isaac hissed, his nostrils flaring almost as much as his eyes.
“I didn’t get us saddled with anything,” Sean defended as he glanced around from their private corner of the Courtyard.  “They found us, remember?”
“I can’t believe she’s real,” Paula muttered absently, shaking from head to toe.  She touched his shoulder without any strength whatsoever. “We can’t stay here.”
Pepe waved them down.  “Let’s not jump the gun.  Maybe she’s not as bad as we thought.”
Isaac flinched at the skinny little shit.  “You was the one wettin’ yo’ damn self about her.  Now you wanna stay in her bat cave?”
“She kept this place for two years.  Why would—”
“How long did she keep the Apocalypse Crew before she sliced ‘em all up?”
“Is that how she did it?” Paula asked with wide eyes.
Sean stepped in.  “Now, hold on.  We can’t go making snap judgments here. She rescued us.  She gave us good meals, a solid roof, and electricity in exchange for a decent work shift.”
“For how much longer, Sean?” Paula asked with a scolding glare. “That woman could kill us anytime she wants.”
Sean took her arms and soothingly said, “We don’t have all the facts about her, and I’m not going to lose my mind over hearsay.”  Still holding her in his hands, he faced Isaac and added, “You didn’t believe the stories for the longest time. Maybe whatever happened was spun up by crazy people, like you said.”
Isaac sneered as he cut in.  “Even still: she says, we do.  That’s a slave’s way. I ain’t no slave and I damn sure ain’t gonna wait around for her to cut me up.  Shit, I don’t even know why I’m still talkin’ to y’all.  I’m outta here.”  Almost immediately, he walked away.
Paula shook free of Sean and blasted, “You know what, Isaac?  After everything you’ve cost us, the least you could do is stand by us.  Have some fucking decency!”
Sean did a double-take.  That was the first time he had ever heard his wife utter such a word.  However, it didn’t stop Isaac from walking away.
