Oscar standing at the hitch rack, but he made no move to stop.
âHi yuh, Cherry-Cow,â Oscar said cheerfully. âI hear you been ridinâ across the line to Tipata to check up on Tolliverâs alibiâand incidentâly on Sheriff Lockwoodâs word. He already told you where Tolliver was the night Bowman was killed.â
Chiricahua Herrick paused, spun about and crossed the sidewalk directly to face Oscar and Lance. âWho told you Iâd been to Tipata?â he growled.
Lance took up the conversation. âI encountered your friend, Kilby, this morning. He spilled the beans.â
Herrickâs swarthy features twisted angrily. âI heard something about that encounter, Tolliver. Taken to beating up fellers when theyâve been drinking, eh? Is that your idea? Get âem when they ainât steady on their pins?â
âFrankly,â Lance said quietly, âI didnât want to do it. I wasnât looking for trouble. I wasnât side-stepping any that was forced upon me either. I couldnât do anything elseâââ
âThatâs your story,â Herrick sneered, deceived by Lanceâs quiet manner
âHell, Cherry-Cow,â Oscar said disgustedly,
âKilbyâs just lucky Lance didnât plug him. He was asking for it. Lance was decent to him just as long as he dared beâââ
âYaah!â Herrick said scornfully. âThatâs why Tolliver hit him. He wouldnât dare cross guns with George Kilby. Kilby would shoot ringsâââ
âOh, cripes,â Lance said wearily, âletâs forget it. There was no powder burned and no one hurt to any extent. If Kilbyâs got any sense heâll be glad I acted as I did when he sobers up. Letâs skip it, Herrickâ¦. I hope you learned that I spent the night at Morelesâ fonda in Tipata the night Bowman was killed.â
Herrick laughed skeptically. âYeahâthatâs what Moreles says, but I wouldnât believe that Mex on a stack of Bibles. You probably paid him plenty pesos for backing up your play. But weâll get the deadwood on you yetâââ
âIf youâre trying to make trouble,â Lance said firmly, âIâll do what I can to accommodate youâââ
â⦠and square matters for the murder of our old pal, Frank Bowman,â Herrick raged on, the angry words gushing from his lips.
âHerrick,â Lance asked, âyou keep talking about your old pal, Bowman. Just how long has he been a pal of yours?â
Herrick paused. âWhyâwhy,â he finally said lamely, âme and the boys have only known him about a month or so, but we were right friendly. We all thought a heap of Frankâââ
âI think youâre a liar,â Lance said quietly.
âYou canât call me a liar!â Herrick flared hotly.
âIâve already done it.â
âThat sounds like war talk, Tolliver,â Herrick said menacingly.
âItâs meant to be!â Lance took a step nearer Herrick. âIf you donât like that kind of war talk get out your iron and go to work.â
Herrick eyed Lance unbelievingly. âYouâre offering to cross guns with me ?â Again he laughed scornfully. âI reckon you donât know my rep hereabouts.â
âIâm not even interested in it,â Lance snapped. âI donât like you or anybody that does. Furthermore, youâre so damned anxious to pin Bowmanâs murder on me Iâm commencing to wonder just who youâre shieldingâââ
âHuh? What did you say?â A certain consternation appeared in Herrickâs beady eyes. âWhere did you ever get such a crazy idea asââ?â
âAnd Iâd also like to know,â Lance interrupted, âjust why you have to report to the bank that my alibi was airtight.â This last was
