itâs been suggested I may be going to hell, this is what I imagined the gate would look like.â
Mitch timidly laid his hand on the volume and solemnly swore to tell absolutely no one about the Shut Up ân Listen under threat of fire and brimstone. Once the oath was made, he was visibly relieved.
âThere,â he said. âThatâll do it.â
âOne more thing,â said Nick. âI need both of you to help me find the other objects and get them back.â
âYou mean going door-to-door?â asked Mitch. âIâm not good at that. Last year I did this wrapping-paper sale for Boy Scouts, and somehow I ended up with more wrapping paper than I started with.â
âLeave it to me,â said Vince. âI have ways of finding things hidden in the shadows.â
And so, with an understanding reached, Nick felt a little bit better about the situation.
âDo me a favor,â Vince said. âIf my mother accosts you between here and the front door, tell her I was friendly and social.â
âActually, you were,â Mitch said.
Vince just glared at him. âGet out.â
âWe donât want her to freak,â Nick told Mitch as they approached Caitlinâs house. âOr to think this is a big dealâand having both of us at her front door might be overwhelming.â
âBut it is a big deal,â Mitch protested. âAnd Caitlin Westfield canât be overwhelmed.â
âMaybe not,â Nick admitted, âbut one person at her door is a visitor. Two people are a conspiracy. Thatâs why you should wait here and let me talk to her.â
In the end, Mitch agreed. Of course, Nickâs real reason for leaving Mitch out of this particular equation was that he wanted the chance to talk to Caitlin alone.
While Mitch lurked in the shadows across the street, Nick rang Caitlinâs doorbell. He paced back and forth on the oversize porch of her oversize house, wondering if she was currently being suffocated by an oversize Adamâs apple. Finally the door opened. It was Caitlin, who was alone, but didnât look especially thrilled to see him.
âHi,â she said. âNick, right?â
âYeah. Sorry to come over without any warning or anything, but I really need to talk to you.â
She crossed her arms. âAbout what?â
She wasnât making this easy, and Nick noticed she wasnât inviting him in.
âSome of the stuff at the garage sale,â he said. âIt might beâ¦toxic. Yeah. And I just wanted to warn you. Iâd be happy to give you your money back for that reel-to-reel tape recorder.â
âThanks for your concern, but you gave it to me for free. And besides, Iâm very happy with it, toxic or not.â
Nick knew he had to choose his words carefully so as not to arouse suspicion. âWell, can you at least tell me if itâ¦works?â
âSorry to disappoint you,â said Caitlin, with an impatient flick of her head, âbut it doesnât.â
âReally?â Nick asked, blinking in surprise.
âYou said yourself it was a piece of junk.â
He had said that to her, but that was then, before heâd seen the toaster. And the Shut Up ân Listen. And the wet cell.
âCan I at least try it out?â he asked.
âToo late,â Caitlin said. âI smashed it for my art project.â
That threw Nick for a loop. âYou what?â
âWith a sledgehammer. Into tiny pieces. Glued them to a big canvas. Media Frenzy , I call it. So whatever it is youâre worried about, you donât have to worry.â
Nick stood there for a minute at a complete loss for words. âOh,â he finally managed, âwell, if you smashed itââ
âI did. Is there anything else you wanted?â
âNo, thatâs it.â
âWell, then. Bye.â
And she closed the door, not quite slamming it in his face, but
