that what you meant to say?â I spoke without barking.
âEllie, please have a seat,â Leon corrected.
We sat. The chairs were close enough for Mac to take my hand and give it a reassuring squeeze. I donât like doctors but Leon was almost okay. Maybe the green scrubs made him seem less scary. He looked very like Hawkeye.
Damn, Iâd done it again. Now Iâd be stuck in Korea. Rain, mud and misery, here we come. Why couldnât I have flashes from Greyâs Anatomy or ER ? Even Scrubs would be a step in the right direction. And why does it always have to be old television programs?
Leon sat behind his desk and read quickly over my notes. Then looked at me. âIs there anything unusual youâve noticed, Ellie?â
âNo.â
âHeadaches gone?â He came around his desk, pulled a black pen-like object from his upper pocket and without warning, shone a super-strength light into my eyes.
âUntil you did that.â
He stopped shining the annoying light. âHeadaches gone?â
âMostly.â
âYou donât make this easy, do you?â
âIâm answering your questions.â
âTell me about these mostly-gone headaches.â He rested back on the edge of his desk.
âItâs no big deal ⦠migraine-type headaches, occasionally.â
âDescribe what happens.â
âOh ⦠I get a numb or tingling arm, some gaps in my vision, sometimes I feel sick, the pain is intense and usually only on the right side of my head.â
He nodded. âItâs not uncommon for migraines to follow a head injury.â
âSo itâs no big deal, right?â
He frowned. âNormally itâs no big deal.â
I didnât like the sound of that. âNormallyâ had a nasty ring to it.
âAnything else I need to know about?â
Hawkeye never frowned like that. Doctors shouldnât frown, itâs unprofessional. Why was he still frowning?
Leon reached for my file, flipped it around, and skimmed a few pages. He asked a series of questions. I answered as well as I could. If heâd asked them about Mac, I could answer in detail but I donât take much notice of myself. I know I should, but who has time? And Macâs so good at watching over me.
I nodded. âIâm fine.â Mac nudged me and mouthed the word ânightmares.â I attempted to silence him with a single crushing look but failed. My heart plummeted. Now the doc would ask me more questions. Weâd never get out of here.
âEllie?â
My mouth opened then shut before the words could escape.
âEllie?â
I tried again and this time succeeded. âI have been having nightmares.â
âI think that is understandable considering what you both went through.â He paused and seemed to scrutinize me. Iâm sure he did: doctors do that penetrating look thing that makes it appear as though they can see inside you. âHow are you walking up or down stairs?â
Wow, didnât expect that.
âStairs? Usually with my feet â one after the other in a vertical motion.â
âUsually?â
âWhat? Youâve never felt the need to crawl up the stairs?â
Leon smiled. âNo, have you?â
âOnly when Iâm really toasted.â After a tequila session.
âAre you going to answer my question regarding the stairs?â
Mac squeezed my hand. Jeez! âOkay, look, a couple of weeks ago I had trouble walking down some stairs but that was because of a migraine the day before.â
âTrouble how?â
Leaving the doctorâs office anytime soon felt like a fading notion. âI couldnât see the edge of the steps and my balance seemed off.â
He frowned again. He was less Hawkeye-cute when he frowned.
âHave you been walking into things more than usual? More klutzy than you used to be?â
Mac raised one eyebrow at me. Heâd been telling me
