two. He wiped his eyes on his sleeve. Trini pushed him into a salon chair, sat in the one next to him. âHow could you not tell me?â She kept her voice down, but she was angry.
âLike you said before, we were afraid you wouldnât hang with us.â
âWhatâd you do? What crimes?â
âMostly benniesâbreakin and enterin. Some grand larceny that got bumped down on a plea. We never hurt nobody.â
âRight, you just stole their money.â
âWe stole food, mostly. At first.â
âI must have Sucker tattooed on me somewhere I donât see. Here my heartâs breakin for you boys, all those sob stories about foster careââ
â Yo. â He calmed himself. âThose were true.â
His anger surprised her. She looked away, pouted. âTtt.â
He studied her in the mirrorâs reflection, found Yolie in her eyes, the fullness of her lips. âHow come your aunt ainât married?â Ray said.
âLost her man in Gulf One, never got over it.â She turned back to Ray. âThis whole import business thing, sheâs doing it for you, you know? She doesnât give a damn about the money. She talks about you every night, says she thinks youâre gonna be a big man someday, somebody gives you half a chance. Sheâs your half a chance, and yâall are too stupid to come on uphill. What a waste.â
âIâll talk to him, T. The J-man, heâs set in his ways, though. Give him a little time to settle down. Weâll see. I gotta tell you, though, Iâm a little worried about bringin trouble to your aunt. Some neighbor gets mad at her, drops a dime, cops find out sheâs harborin two fugitives in her atticââ
âYou know how many illegals sheâs hidden in that attic while they were on their way to getting green cards?â
âHarriet Tubman of Washington Heights, huh?â
âRaymond, you canât lie to me like that, not ever again, okay?â
âOkay.â
âAnd promise me yâall arenât gonna do any more rustlin.â
âNo more rustlin,â he said. If I can get out of this last job tonight , he didnât say.

Ray knocked on Jerryâs door. José could wait another goddam month or so for his Ninja.
âRound Face. Youâre early.â Jerry looked out into his lot. âWhereâs the ride?â
âYeah, um, about that. We donât wanna do it.â
Jerry frowned. âWell, youâre gonna do it anyway.â
âLook man, I came here out of courtesyââ
âNo, you came because you know if you scooch out on me Iâll have somebody ram a screwdriver through the back of your beach ball head there, and youâre right. Listen, itâs too late now, kid. Yous are either bringing me a Lincoln Navigator or a pair of thumbs.â
âHowâs that?â Ray said.
âI already got a buyer gave me half the money. This is gonna be an ek-scape vehicle this thing yousâre boosting tonight. I scooch this guy and the guy, heâs this maniac Russian, heâll cut off my thumbs. Now, if Iâm short a pair of thumbs Iâll need yours for replacements, see? You and José, which one of youâs a lefty?â
Ray liked his thumbs, especially when they were attached to his hands. âOkay, but thisâll be our last job with you.â
âRight. Yous kids, youâll be back again next week begging me for work.â
âDonât bet your daughterâs Catholic school tuition on it,â Ray said.
âTalkin about my daughter, Round Face? Half-breed mutt. Get over to that vehicle heist before I pop a cap into your fat ass.â
Ray left. âAsshole.â
âDonât try to skip out on me, Ray. Wherever yous go, Iâll find you. Believe me.â
Ray believed him.
