back up.
Taylor motions me forward.
âI got thrown once,â I mention.
âHow old were you when it happened?â
âI was ten. Iâm twelve now.â I wish I could say I was a more significant age, like fourteen.
She nods. âI was twelve once. Now Iâm sixteen.â
âSo how was it for youâbeing twelve?â
âNot so good. Thatâs when my mom died.â
Nice one, Anna. Open your fat yap and ruin everything. âIâm sorry, I didnât mean to beââ
âItâs okay.â
No itâs not. âIâm sorry you lost your mom.â
âIt was bad. Everything hurt.â She rubs Zoe. âI didnât even want to be thirteen, not without Mom.â
Zoe shakes her head. Taylor smiles at me. âI thought my life was over, but all of it got me here. This is a good place to be. Hereâs the synopsis: my father started dating all these womenâhe wanted a new wife and he found one.â
âDo you like her?â
âNo.â
I need to stop asking questions.
âI lived with them for two years, nine months, and seventeen days.â
Zoe neighs in her stall. âWeâll get to you in a minute,â she tells the horse. Taylor pushes her straw cowboy hat back. âI asked my dad to send me to boarding schoolâhe said it was too expensive. I got to the right place eventually.â
I mention my dadâs anger. âThatâs part of why Iâm here,â I tell her.
âSo weâre both tough.â Taylor opens the door to Zoeâs stall. âZoe got here three weeks after I did. I think we saved each other. Right, Zoe?â
Zoe gives Taylor a push with her nose. Taylor laughs. She hands me the reins. âDo you really want to knowher?â
âYes.â
âStretch out your hand, then.â
I stretch out my right hand with the yellow scrunchie.
I look at Zoe from the side, I can tell sheâs waiting. âSo, Zoe, this is my hand, my right hand, and I do want to mention that Iâm right-handed, so if you were thinking about, say, biting it or eating some of my fingers, that would be bad.â
Zoe sniffs my hand.
I look at this white horse with gray and black spots. âI really like you,â I say.
Taylor makes a clicking sound. Zoe turns her head. âGet on, Anna.â
Uh, this is kind of quick. I like the concept of riding a horse, notâ
Zoe shakes her head.
âMaybe she doesnât want me toââ
âPut your foot in the stirrup.â
Taylor gives me a lift up. It doesnât take much, and here I am, up on this horse. Up on top of the world. âWeâre not going fast, right?â
âNot yet.â Taylor takes the reins and walks Zoe backand forth. I like being high, but I tense a little; Zoe shakes her head fast and neighs.
âShe can tell youâre nervous just now.â
âShe can?â
Taylor pats her. âItâs okay, girl. Itâs fine.â
Zoe backs up and turns around and heads out of the barn. âUh, this horse is moving. . . .â
Taylor laughs. âEnjoy it!â
I do, sort of, but Zoe keeps going toward the riding ring.
âPull the reins and say, âWhoa, girl.ââ
I do this, but my voice doesnât sound like I mean it. Zoe seems to be waiting for a strong voice here, because now sheâs just walking off on her own with me on her back.
âHow are you feeling?â Taylor asks.
âLike I might need rescuing. . . .â I remember getting thrown over the fence, landing hard on my hands.
âThereâs probably lots of things you need, Anna, but I donât think rescuing is one of them.â
âWhoa, Zoe.â I pull the reins, and instantly she stops. I pat her neck. âGood girl.â
Taylor walks over smiling, and suddenly I realize that the whole time Iâve been with this horse I havenâtthought about
