last waking thoughts.
She and Brad had been together since schooldays, and everyone expected them to get married and have kids some day; but Robin wasn’t too sure. She yearned for something different, something exciting, but couldn’t quite say what that ‘something’ was, she just knew there was more to life………..somewhere.
Grabbing a bagel on the way out of the door, she called “Bye, mom, see you later.”
“Ok, darling, have a good day.”
Robin went to the end of the road to catch the cross-town bus into O’hare; “I work in the business capital of the Mid-West; little old me from the suburbs of Park Ridge.” She was excited every day, about the future, about her job, but most especially about seeing the handsome stranger. She planned her arrival with precision; knowing that if she got there at eight twenty precisely, that he would be mounting the imposing stairs to the entrance, at just the same time. Her mom was always scolding her for eating ‘on the hoof’, and telling her she would get indigestion; but it was necessary if she was to have enough time to get ready, and still encounter the stranger.
He hadn’t spoken to her thus far; but things had progressed to a nod of the head. Robin’s heart had leaped the first time he did that; “He noticed me at last!” she thought and was smiling for the whole day after!
The bus seemed to take forever that morning, and she ran the two blocks to the office, checking her watch constantly; he was just disappearing inside the automatic doors as she was at the bottom of the steps. Never had she taken that many steps in such a short space of time; she almost tripped over the top one in her haste to get to the elevator in time. Her heart sank as the door was just closing as she ran across the foyer, until a hand stopped it from going any further; he had held the door open for her.
“Thank you,” she said, looking him in the face properly for the first time.
“You’re welcome,” he smiled in return, and then turned to face the door as usual.
She was glad he hadn’t said anything else that day; her heart was beating too fast for her to even think of talking coherently, so she just waited for her floor, gazing at the back of that well shaped head. His hair was thick and dark, and slightly longer than was fashionable, but it suited him. He smelled of cigars and expensive aftershave, and wore designer suits; this mornings’ was a delicate shade of charcoal, which set of his gray eyes to perfection. When he had looked at her, she noticed the patrician nose, and well groomed eyebrows; he was everything that Brad wasn’t. As much as she loved Brad, (or thought she did, having precious little experience of other guys to speak of) she couldn’t help but fantasies about this guy. Who was he, what department did he work in, is he married, does he even know I’m alive? Several questions tumbled over themselves in her mind on most days; but today was different. He had looked at her and smiled, so now he did know she was alive.

Joshua Wallace made a mental note of which floor the pretty newcomer got off at; “Hm, number four, so she must be the new junior temp in the filing department,” he mused. He prided himself on knowing when new staff were appointed, and always attempted to get to know their names; although the last month had been hectic, and he hadn’t had the time to complete his normal monthly staff review. “I will make sure I catch up on that this morning,” he thought, “She definitely has ‘potential.’”
Reaching his private offices in the penthouse suite, Joshua just had time to place his briefcase on his desk, when the first phone call came; the rest of the morning was spent in a whirl of activity and calls, without enough time for even a coffee.
“Rebecca, please come through; I only need about five minutes of your time. Bring details of any new staff from the last month please; I need to do a quick review, then I need to
