ran through the town. âI understand you have been keeping watch, too,â Mrs. Hargrove said with a nod to Judd. She then lookeddown at Bobby. âAnd I expect you have a little helper here.â Bobby smiled up at the woman. âWeâre guarding the ballet.â âSo youâre in the ballet, too,â Mrs. Hargrove said with an approving nod. âWhat part are you going to play?â âI donât know yet. I might have to be a snow flake if we canât get any other kids to be in it with us.â âAh,â Mrs. Hargrove murmured. âSnowflakes are wonderful things. Especially at Christmas. Each one is different.â âYes, maâam,â Bobby said with out much enthusiasm. âWhy donât you go help your sister with that costume?â Judd said to Bobby. Judd had a feeling that Mrs. Hargrove wasnât going to tell him the news she had as long as either of the children were around to hear it. Bobby pushed his chair back from the table and left to follow Amanda. Mrs. Hargrove sat down in the chair Bobby had left. She didnât waste time but got straight to the point. âHave you heard from the sheriff this morning?â Judd shook his head. âThe kids have had les sons this morning, and I come in with them. Iâve been here.â âThatâs what the sheriff thought. Thatâs why he called me. He wanted you to know that they think theyâve arrested the kidsâ father over in Miles City. The man wonât say who he is, but he had that picture Lizette de scribed with him.â âDid the man have a tat too of a snake on his arm?â Mrs. Hargrove nodded. âThe sheriff said it was a cobra.â âThat sounds like itâs him, all right. Did he have a woman with him when he was arrested?â Mrs. Hargrove shook her head. âNo, it was just him. Are you thinking your cousin is hooked back up with him?â âI donât know what to think,â Judd admitted. âShe should have been back here weeks ago, even if sheâd had car trouble on the way to Denver. Besides, I donât know how he would know where to find the kids if he hadnât got ten the information from my cousin. Though I canât understand why sheâd be foolish enough even to talk to the man.â âShe must have had her reasons,â Mrs. Hargrove said. âWell, I hope they were good ones.â Mrs. Hargrove nodded. âThe sheriff said they caught the man breaking into a gas station in the middle of the night.â âHow long will he be in jail?â âLong enough. They took him to the jail in Miles City for the time being. In a week or so theyâll take him to the jail in Billings. If he is the childrenâs father, apparently thereâs an other war rant out for his arrest from the state of Colorado, so when they finish with him here, theyâre going to ship him down there.â âHeâs a popular guy.â âIâd say so. The sheriff figures theyâll be sending him to Colorado some time after Christmas.â Judd nodded. âThatâll be some Christmas present for the kids.â Amanda and Bobby were starting to walk back to ward them with the fairy costume in their hands. Even from here, Judd could see the excitement on Amandaâs face. âDo you think it will upset them to know their fatherâs in jail?â âI wish I knew,â Judd said. âOn the one hand, he is their father. But on the other hand, theyâre afraid of him. Knowing heâs in jail might make them more comfort able even coming into town here. They seem a little nervous when theyâre not at my place.â Mrs. Hargrove nodded. âI wondered if thatâs why you havenât brought them to Sunday school yet.â She didnât leave time for Judd to think of the real reason he hadnât brought the children. âBut now that
