mind falling off?â she asked, after he had tried to demonstrate jumping a flight of concrete steps and landed heavily on his back.
âNah,â he said, brushing down his jeans. âYou get used to it.â He grinned. âWant to see my scars?â He pulled up a trouser leg. There was a livid red graze from the accident yesterday, but Danny pointed to a pale jagged line underneath. âSee this one here? I got it when I split my knee open. I was trying to jump a swimming pool and I crashed into the side. Couldnât walk for three weeks. Had twenty stitches.â
Megan stared at the jagged scar. âWow. That must have hurt.â
âCourse.â
âBut it didnât put you off?â
A slow smile crept over his face, and his eyes flashed silver again. âNo way. I live for this. Without skating â without bikes and speed and all that â Iâd just crumble away and die. Do you know what I mean?â
Megan looked out over the skate park. It didnât hold the same appeal for her, but she recognized thepassion in Dannyâs voice. He lived for it. She knew what that felt like. âYeah,â she said. âI feel the same way about dancing.â
âDancing?â Danny was momentarily startled. âWhat, you mean like ballet?â
âNo. I do ballroom dancing.â She saw the incomprehension on his face. âLike â er â waltz? And rumba? Um . . . like on
Strictly Come Dancing
?â
âOh.â Dannyâs face cleared. âI get you. I donât really watch that stuff. Seems a bit lame to me.â
âThatâs because you donât know anything about it,â retorted Megan. âItâs just as difficult as your ollies and kickthings.â
He grinned at her. âWhatever you say. Let me show you a manual. Itâs like a wheelie on a bike.â Off he went again.
Iâve never met anyone like him,
Megan thought to herself.
Itâs weird because he loves skateboarding and I love dancing but itâs as if we feel the same way about them. Almost like weâre in two different worlds but are somehow connected
. A smile crept over her face as she wondered what her friends back home would think of Danny. What would
Jake
make of him? Danny and Jake were total opposites! Jake was quiet whereas Danny was brash; Jake was careful whereas Danny was wild . . . She watched him twist and flip his boardalong a ramp, and then trip and crash to the ground again.
âYou finished yet?â called a voice, and Megan looked up to see Samantha and Jasmine heading towards them. Paul was busy trying to do something that looked like a twirl on his board at the far end of the park.
âNo,â said Danny, sounding annoyed. âWhy?â
âMum said she wanted us back for lunch,â said Samantha, glancing over at Megan. âOh, hello.â
âHi.â
âAunt Yvonne is coming, remember?â
Danny scowled. âDonât see why I should be there. She doesnât like me anyway.â
Samantha rolled her eyes. âItâs not that she doesnât like you. But you didnât help last time by wearing that shirt with the bleeding skull on it. She thinks youâre scary.â
Danny grinned. âEven better.â He winked at Megan. âI like being scary.â Megan couldnât help but smile back. âWhat can I wear today?â he mused. âThe shirt with the big knife on it?â
âDonât you dare, Mumâll have a fit,â said Samantha. âAnd besides, Aunt Yvonne usually gives us money, so donât do anything crazy.â
Dannyâs expression changed. âThatâs right, Iâdforgotten. Maybe I can tap her for a tenner for new trucks.â
âYou and your skateboard,â said Samantha. âSo are you coming then or not?â
Danny glanced at Paul. âOh, Iâm off too, mate,â said Paul. âGot some stuff to
