get it, sis.â
âMe neither,â Claudia said, wretchedly. âBut then, I donât really get what happened in the first place, with Kevin.â
âIâm not sure thatâs quite true,â Grace said. âYou said you were at a low ebb, said youâd been feeling âcoldâ, saidââ
âPlease,â Claudia said, quickly, âdonât be scornful. I donât think I can cope with that.â
âHow do you think Danielâs going to cope,â Grace said quietly, âif he sees the photos? When he realizes you lied to him about coming here, that you were escaping, running away.â
âYou make it sound as if I want to hurt him.â
âI donât mean to,â Grace said. âI know itâs not in your nature to want to hurt anyone, and certainly not someone you love as much as Daniel.â She paused. âThatâs assuming you do still love him.â
âOh, God, yes,â Claudia said. âThatâs why I left, donât you see? If Iâd stayed, Iâd have had no choice but to tell him the whole truth, and I couldnât bear the thought of seeing his face when I told him â and sure, I know it wonât be any better if he hears it from that snake , itâll be even worse, but at least I wonât be there.â She shrugged. âI told you Iâm a coward. Now you know.â
Joshua began, suddenly, to cry, and Grace stood up swiftly to retrieve him from the playpen, Woody wagging his tail as she came close, then settling down again, resigned to being ignored.
âI guess Iâve been hoping,â Claudia went on, âthat maybe Jerome wonât go to Daniel, because after all, what would be the point? Once Dan knows the truth, thereâs no hope of a payout.â
The baby had already stopped crying, but Grace, grateful for the comfort of his warm, solid body in her arms, began to walk back and forth in the small room, kissing the top of his head, consoled by him.
âSo what now?â She stopped moving, looked down at her sister.
âI donât know,â Claudia said.
âDo you think,â Grace asked, slowly, already repelled by the idea, âthat I should call Frank?â
âGod, no,â Claudia said. âWhat for?â
âIntervention, maybe?â Grace said.
âSurely heâs the last person in the world we want to talk to,â Claudia said. âAnd I donât think for a single minute that heâd be interested in helping.â
âI guess not,â Grace said. âWhat about Roxanne? Maybe if she knew what her son had been up to . . .â
âThat would mean telling her what Iâve done,â Claudia said, appalled.
âMaybe she already knows,â Grace said, then shook her head. âI guess itâs not my best idea.â She paused. âLetâs wait and see what Sam thinks.â
âDo we have to tell Sam?â
âYes,â Grace said. âItâs the reason youâve come to us.â She saw fresh misery in her sisterâs expression. âI mean, I know itâs your personal business, but now youâve shared it with me . . . I donât keep anything from Sam these days.â
âAll right,â Claudia said.
âYou said that you need my help, sis.â Grace sat down on the sofa again, settled Joshua on her lap, gave him his rattle. âIâm just not sure â other than being here for you â what I can actually do to help.â
âI donât know that either.â Claudia paused. âMaybe I just need you to help me work out why this has happened. Why Iâve done such destructive things, why I even looked at Kevin in the first place.â
Joshua was content again, sucking on his rattle, leaning into his mother.
Every last trace of Graceâs exasperation had melted away.
âHave you really been so terribly
