sigh.
Another woman smitten. Amazing. Denny made the whole woman/man game look so easy. If only she didnât struggle so badly with it. âFor an ornery old codger, you sure rack up the babes.â
âItâs my charm.â
âItâs something, all right.â Ashley considered him, then asked, âSo what about Zara?â
âWhat about her?â
âYou still seeing her?â
âHere and there. She wonât be at the wedding, if youâre worried about Quinton running into her.â
That made her laugh. âAfter seeing her with you, I havenât given it another thought. I figured youâd ruined her for all other men.â
âIâm sure youâre right.â
Grinning, Ashley glanced at the clock on the wall. âI wonder where heâs going so early.â
âWho? Quinton?â
âHeâs dressed all casual when he usually wears suits, and itâs too early for him to be going to the office.â
âWant me to find out?â When she just stared at him, Denny said, âWell, I can, you know.â
âDonât even think about actually checking up on him.â Her order didnât faze Denny one bit. âI mean it, old man. Heâs driving me nuts, butââ
âHeâs bothering you?â And then in a growl, âMaybe I donât like him after all.â
âOh God, donât start cracking your knuckles. Itâs not like that.â Quinton was a handful all on his own. She didnât need to juggle Denny now, too.
âThen how is it?â
âYouâve got gonads. Put it together.â
âAh.â Dennyâs ears actually lifted, he smiled so big. âHeâs bothering you that way. I get it.â
In that moment Denny seemed like a damn fine confidante. She didnât have anyone else to talk to except May, and May had an upcoming wedding to deal with. She was euphoric, and Ashley didnât want to bring her down with her petty concerns. âIf you stop grinning like the village idiot, Iâd like to get your thoughts on this mess.â
âMess?â
âExactly.â She propped her head in both hands. âBefore meeting Quinton, I liked my life just fine.â
âNo, you didnât. You just accepted it.â
Because sheâd never envisioned anything different. âMaybe.â
âSo whatâs the problem? Quinton putting a kink in the works?â
âIn a big way. Since meeting him, I feel half sick most of the time. I canât get him off my mind, which means Iâm falling behind at work, and I canât study worth a damn, andââ
Very matter-of-factly, Denny said, âHey, if youâre feeling froggy, leap. Itâll solve your problems, and then some.â
Such a down-to-earth way of looking at all things sexual boggled her mind. âYou think sex is a regular cure-all, huh?â
He saluted her with the coffee cup. âI guarantee itâll cure what ails you.â
âMaybe, but itâs not that simple.â
âSeems simple enough to me. Youâre a grown, intelligent, independent woman.â
âWell, hallelujah, youâve finally admitted it.â
âAnd he seems like a responsible guy.â Denny shrugged. âGo for it.â
âItâll complicate things.â
âBaloney.â He rubbed his jaw, scrutinizing her. âYouâre not an inhibited girl. You obviously want the man. Iâm surprised you havenât used him up already.â
âDo I look like a hoochie or something?â
He ignored that to ask, âWhatâs really going on here, Ashley? Why all the hesitation?â
âWeâre as different as night and day.â
âSince youâre like the Tasmanian devil in neon, no one is like you. You might as well get used to it and not let it stand in the way of some fun.â
Ashley wrinkled her nose at him.
