for her new friend. There was only one way to find out, go
to the party.
Back at his place he spied on his neighbor. The lights were
dim and her bedroom door was closed. It didn’t look like she was going to the
party. She was sleeping.

Chapter Four

The next night Tony peeked in on his neighbor. Allie seemed
to be getting ready for something, so he decided to pay her a friendly visit
and see what her plans were for the night.
She didn’t seem too happy to see him when she answered the
door.
“Am I interrupting anything?” he asked.
“I’m taking off soon.” She didn’t open the door all the way
and she didn’t invite him in. “What can I do for you, Tony?”
“I was invited to a party that’s supposed to be going on for
a few days. I came over to see if you’d like to go with me.” It wasn’t a lie,
he was going and if she was too, they might as well go together.
“Sorry I have plans.” Was she weakening to him? She looked
honestly sorry she couldn’t spend time with him.
“Oh. Okay, well maybe another time.”
“We’ll see. I have to go now.” She slammed the door in his
face.
Maybe he’d misread her. That didn’t seem like a woman ready
to spend time with him. He shook his head and couldn’t help but laugh. Women.
He’d never understand them. No time to worry about that. He had a party to go
to and some drugs to find.

Allie finished putting on her makeup and found a light sweater
to go over her sundress. The air off the water would be a bit chilly tonight
and she didn’t want to freeze as she made her way over to Paul’s.
She’d surprised herself when she’d decided to take him up on
his offer. She’d never dreamed she’d be so forward as to show up at his place,
but she was about to. When Tony came over and invited her to go out with him,
she’d been tempted. Very tempted. That was the problem. She had to get him out
from under her skin. Mingling with other people might be exactly what the
doctor ordered.
Tony’s place was dark, except for the porch light.
He had gone out for the night.
Sadness filled her. She wondered if he would find another
woman to be with, to finish what they’d started. He hardly seemed like the
player type, but she didn’t know him that well. It was for the best either way.
Allie didn’t need a relationship.
Paul was excited to see her when she arrived at his place.
She hadn’t expected so many people, but the more the merrier, right?
“Hey you made it. Come on in and make yourself comfortable.
What can I get you to drink?”
    “A beer would be fine.”
Paul grabbed a cold bottle from the tub of beers. He cracked
the twist cap off and handed it to her.
“Thanks.” Allie took a swig of the golden liquid. She wasn’t
much of a partier, but tonight she wasn’t going to be the same ole Allie.
Tonight she was going to step out of her comfort zone.
“Make yourself at home. I have to go check on something.”
Nice, he invited her to the party and then left her.
She glanced around at all the partiers. She felt out of her
element. They were a bit younger than her. They all were fresh out of college
and at twenty-seven there was a difference. Pushing her fears and their
differences aside, Allie was determined to have a good time. Right up to the
point where Tony sauntered over with a beer in his hand.
“I didn’t expect to see you here.”
“What brings you to this party?” This was the last place she
thought she’d find Tony. These guys definitely didn’t seem like the type he’d
hang with, unless he thought the drug dealer was at the party.
“Paul invited me and I couldn’t resist. I was here last
night too.”
    When had Paul invited Tony?
“I didn’t know you two knew each other.”
    “Just met yesterday.”
    How convenient.
He was distracted. Allie wanted to pull on his arm and bring
his attention back to her, but it would be fruitless. He obviously was more
interested in the other people. Did he have a
