working.â He held out his hook, and Orson shook it with his finger.
âGood-bye, Captain,â the giant said. Orson strode off down the dock, his boots squelching as he went.
âYou should go and get dry too, Ulf,â Dr. Fielding said, feeling his damp T-shirt. It was still wet from when heâd been in the water.
Ulf looked down at the sea monster.
âDonât worry, Ulf. Iâll make sure itâs comfortable, and weâll do your inspection as soon as I get back.â
Every month, before the full moon, Dr. Fielding gave Ulf a full physical examination, monitoring his transformation from boy to wolf.
âGood-bye then, werewolf,â Captain Crab said.
âThanks for your help, Captain,â Ulf replied.
He walked to his ATV and kick-started the engine.
Â
Captain Crab watched the werewolf and the giant leave. He narrowed his eyes and turned to Dr. Fielding. She was holding the venom extractor. âIâm still amazed that this worked,â she said.
The Captain grinned. âGood old Professor Farraway,â he said. He followed her as she walked to her Jeep and placed the venom extractor on the backseat.
âCaptain, can I ask you something?â Dr. Fielding said.
âWhy, of course,â Captain Crab replied. âIs something the matter?â
She took a piece of coral from her pocket. âDid you notice anything suspicious out on the Farraway Reserve?â
âSuch as?â
âPoachers,â Dr. Fielding replied.
Captain Crab raised his bushy eyebrows. âNow why would you ask that?â
She showed him the piece of coral. âThis is part of the sea monsterâs shell.â The coralâs edge was jagged and broken, and had black flecks of gunpowder on it. âItâs as if its injury was caused by a blast.â
âWhat do you mean, Dr. Fielding?â
âShock fishing,â she said. âItâs a method of poaching sea beasts. Explosives are used to stun them, causing them to float to the surface. It was outlawed over fifty years ago.â
âI didnât see any poachers,â Captain Crab told her.
Dr. Fielding picked up her phone from the frontseat of her Jeep. She tapped a number into the keypad. âHello, this is Dr. Fielding from the RSPCB. Could you put me through to the department for National and International Criminal Emergencies?â
âNICE?â Captain Crab asked.
âItâs just a precaution, Captain,â Dr. Fielding told him. âHello, is that the department for National and International Criminal Emergencies? Iâd like you to check something. Could you send a boat out to the Farraway Rââ
Captain Crab knocked the telephone from Dr. Fieldingâs hand and kicked it into the lagoon. âOops,â he said.
âCaptain! What are you doing?â
âI wouldnât worry about poachers,â the Captain replied. He stared at Dr. Fielding. âNow Iâd like that venom extractor, if I may.â
Dr. Fielding glanced at the venom extractor on the back seat of the Jeep. âWhat on earth for?â
Captain Crab grinned. âOh, Dr. Fielding, Iâvewanted it all along. Why do you think I went to all the trouble of bringing you a sea monster? I needed its venom.â
Dr. Fielding grabbed the venom extractor and held it behind her back.
âYou see, I knew that the venom extractor worked,â the Captain said stepping closer.
âStay away from me.â
âProfessor Farraway wasnât killed by a sea monster. He returned from his expedition safe and sound.â
âWhat are you talking about?â Dr. Fielding said. âIâd like you to leave now.â
Captain Crab laughed.
Dr. Fielding jumped into the Jeep clutching the venom extractor. She fumbled with her keys, trying to start the engine.
âIn a hurry, are you, Dr. Fielding?â Captain Crab asked. The engine started. Captain Crab slid a wrench
