but she had been too scared.
While Dmitri looked desperate and desperate people will behave irrationally, Boris was all business and she didn’t doubt his ability to follow through on any threats delivered by his boss. Sighing, she vowed that she would look into self-defense classes when she returned to California.
She looked up as Vitaly exited the bathroom. “Are you ready, kotyonok?”
“For what?”
“Come see.”
Putting on her robe, she followed him and gasped when she saw what he had done. Candles were spread throughout the room as they cast the bathroom in a cheery glow. The bathtub was filled with bubbles and the scent of strawberries and vanilla filled the air.
“This is wonderful.” Kissing the top of her head, Vitaly hugged her from behind.
“From the moment we met, you carried the scent of strawberries on you and I always think of you when I smell them.” Reaching for the tie on her robe, he slid it off her shoulders. “Come, let’s get in.” As Sarah climbed into the tub and sat down, she sighed. The water felt so good. Sliding forward, she made room while Vitaly sat behind her before settling back against his chest. Reaching over the side, he produced two glasses of Champagne and handed one to her. Taking a sip, Sarah smiled.
“Why, Mr. Chekov, are you trying to get me drunk? Again?” Sarah teased. Sliding a hand around her waist, he rubbed her stomach.
“This time, I don’t plan to have you drink so much that you fall asleep on me. Besides, I think that you’ve slept enough for one day.” Laughing, Sarah cuddled against him, as she sipped from her glass. Setting his glass down, he picked up a strawberry and held it to her lips. “Take a bite; it will change the taste of the Champagne.” Biting into the sweet berry, she took another sip.
“Oh my, that’s fantastic.” Laughing, he gave her another bite and then groaned as she licked the juice off his hand.
“My feisty kitten, what you do to me.”
“Well, I wasn’t so feisty. I didn’t do a damn thing while I was held prisoner. I should have tried to escape, but I didn’t have any shoes or a coat and well, I was scared.”
“You did exactly right, kotyonok. Boris Banovich is a trained killer.” Shivering, Sarah held her glass up as he refilled it. “It’s over now and we have much to celebrate. At least I hope so.”
“What does that mean?”
“The night you were kidnapped, I had arranged a party at the club. I even went to see your father. To get permission. I wanted all your friends and family there when I-” Holding a ring box in front of her, he opened it as she gasped.
“Sarah, my Sarah. We’ve been through so much in such a short amount of time and with each passing day; I find that I cannot live without you. You are my heart, kotyonok. Would you please consent to becoming my wife?”
With a squeal, Sarah rolled over in the tub as Vitaly flinched. “Woman, mind those elbows and knees, I wish to make love to you.” Laughing, she threw her arms around his neck as she kissed him. “Is that a yes? Because I have yet to hear a yes,” he told her as he kissed her back.
“Oh, Vitaly, yes, of course, I’ll marry you.”
As the clock neared midnight, they stood in front of the window in the living room wrapped in each other’s arms. Looking out toward Times Square, they could make out the ball as it was preparing to drop. Turning on the radio, they could hear the screams from the crowd as the countdown began. At midnight, he turned her around as he folded her into his arms.
“Happy New Year, my darling. I love you.”
“Happy New Year, babe. I love you too.”
