right?â
âThatâs right.â Trentâs jaw hardened. âBut his remains were found.â
Rebeccaâs stomach clenched. âBut you know you werenât responsible. You couldnât haveââ
âI could have done something if Iâd been watching them more closely. If Iâd followed them into the front yardââ
âBut you were watching the baby! It wasnât your fault, Trent.â
He laughed, a short, cold sound. âI know. I think I even was able to forget about it for a little while until Dannyâs little boy, my nephew, was kidnapped.â
Rebecca stared. âNo!â
âYes.â Trentâs expression grew remote. âFour years ago, when he was a year old. His mother, my sister-in-law, killed herself a year after that.â
âOh, God.â Now Rebecca could understand how losslike this had become such a monster in Trentâs eyes. In his heart. She curled her legs out of his lap and knelt on the cushions beside him. âIâm sorry, Trent.â Her hands grasped both of his. âIâm so sorry for your familyâs pain.â
Though his fingers laced with hers, his expression remained distant. âI want to be in this babyâs life.â His voice wasnât urgent or upset. It wasnât cool and casual, either. It was plain certain. âOur babyâs life.â
Oh, no. She felt her spine going soft. âTrentâ¦â
âI want an arrangement that wonât make it easy for you to take the baby from me.â
âI wouldnâtââ
âAnd I donât want to be a part-time father either. Iâve had one of those, too.â
Rebecca stilled. âI donât want to be a part-time mother myself. Thatâs not what I went through this for.â
âIf we donât get married, the fact is, Rebecca, weâll both be part-time parents. Iâll make sure of that.â
Jerking her hands from his, she drew away from him. âAre you threatening to take my baby from me?â
âNo. Iâm telling you that Iâm going to be in this childâs life. Iâm telling you that if we share custody, then neither of us gets what we want. The only way for that to happen, for us both to be satisfied, is to get married.â
She couldnât⦠She wouldnâtâ¦. But his determination to be a father to her baby made his offer just the teeniest bit tempting. Oh, Eisenhower, he must loveyou. He must already love you like I do. Then she remembered her steely spine. âTrent, no.â
But he must have seen that sentimental yes on her face. âDonât worry, Rebecca. I promise it wonât be a problem. Youâll have a say in everything, in every way we work it out.â
âBut how could it work out? What if one day you fall in loveââ
âDonât make me laugh. Weâre cynical on romance, remember? The fact is, weâll do better creating a partnership on practical matters. Youâre not counting on love to come your way, are you?â
âHah.â Then she collapsed against the back of the love seat, unable to believe what she couldnât be seriously contemplating. âThis is just a bad dream, right? Tell me that any minute Iâm going to wake up.â
âShh, shh, shh.â He dragged her feet back into his lap and started that hypnotizing massage again. âJust relax.â
She closed her eyes to give herself a barrier against his gorgeous face. âI havenât agreed,â she reminded him.
âI think we should marry as soon as possible,â he murmured. âThereâs no reason to wait and thereâs every reason for us to become better acquainted.â
The whole idea of getting better acquainted through marriage was so overwhelming that she couldnât find the voice to protest. He kept up that soft kneading, that soft talking, spinning tales of their future
