legal prowess in action. He was confident in everything he did. The courtroom was no exception. It didn’t matter to him if his client was innocent or not. Cayson lived for the competition. Simply put, he loved to win.
“ Thanks for all of your help,” he told her as he approached. “You made my life a hell of a lot easier.”
She stood and slung her purse over her shoulder. “Are you kidding me? I should be thanking you. I’m learning so much by watching you.”
His dark eyes brightened as his gaze swooped up and down her body, finally settling on the bare skin at the open collar of her white blouse. She felt as though he could see right through the thin fabric. As people filed past, he lowered his voice for her ears only. “So, you like watching me, huh?”
The huskiness of his voice sent tremors through her. When he licked his lips, her nipples tightened in response. “That’s not how I meant it, but yeah, I do like watching you move.”
“The feeling is mutual. Sometimes, I can’t keep my eyes off you.”
Her stomach was in overdrive now. She willed it to stop doing those damn flip-flops. She averted her gaze from his strong, chiseled jaw and tried to focus on his hair instead. It was a mistake. That stray lock was brushing his forehead again, dangling like tantalizing fruit, begging her to tuck it back in place. Or better yet, run her fingers through the thick waves of hair.
Cayson was all man, and right now, she was totally unequipped to handle his ass. She felt like prey being stalked by a hunter. But was he attracted to her? Or was he simply enjoying the game? Sometimes, she didn’t know how to take him. He ran cold one minute. Hot the next. At this moment, Cayson Sullivan was definitely hot for her. Maybe winning made him horny.
She tore her gaze from his handsome face, and looked around as the courtroom emptied. “So what now?” she asked.
“ Now, we celebrate.”
They stopped at a bar called The Chute. When Destiny asked Cayson about the strange name, he told her the original owner was a former CEO who opened the bar with money he’d received from a golden parachute. Now, it was a local hangout for lawyers. Some went there to lick their wounds from getting their asses kicked in court. Others dropped in to brag about their wins. They stayed there for a few hours, socializing with the steady stream of JADE staff that came through the doors. Phaedra, Destiny, and a few other ladies from the office grabbed a table and let their hair down, laughing and joking about office politics. At one point, Phaedra leaned over and whispered in Destiny’s ear. “Looks like you’ve caught someone’s interest.”
Destiny didn’t have to ask who that someone was. Cayson’s eyes followed her around the room like GPS. Every move she made, she felt his gaze on her. It would have been creepy if any other guy had done it. But with him, it was erotic. She creamed in her panties at the thought of him lusting for her.
She downplayed the attention. “You’re imagin ing things,” she told Phaedra. “There’s too much eye candy here for Cayson to stay focused on me.”
Phaedra smirked. “I’ve never known him to eat candy. He’s more of a meat and potatoes kind of guy.”
The two laughed, and Destiny was grateful that Phaedra changed the subject. She didn’t want to think about Cayson’s new fascination with her. Over the past few weeks, she’d felt a strong pull of sexual attraction. She was trying hard as hell to resist it. Like Cayson had told her over and over again, their situation was temporary. She was not about to waste time and energy into being his latest plaything. If and when she decided to sleep with a man, it would be on her own terms–not his.
Cayson celebrated so hard, Destiny didn’t trust him to drive home. She wasn’t sure how many Whiskey Sours a grown man could handle, but she’d stopped counting at six. The entire ten-minute drive from
