Lex.â
âHi.â
âWhat are you doing?â
âTalking to you.â
âWhatâs on for tonight? Do you and Adrian have plans?â
Lexie knew the magic name would crop up.
âNo.â
âRight, right. Tell me. Exactly what is this relationship of yours with Adrian?â
âHeâs my roommate.â
âIs that it?â
âLook, why do you ask me stupid questions? Donât you have anything better to do, like spend time with Dick?â
âHis name is Richard.â
âRichard then. Isnât he the one youâre in love with this week?â
Gabby hung up. That was twice now.
âHello?â
âAdrian?â
âYes.â
âItâs Gabby.â
He knew it was as soon as she said hello.
âGabby. Itâs lovely to hear your voice.â
âIs it?â
There was a long pause.
âYes.â
âWill you meet me?â
âWhere?â
She gave him the address.
âIâll be there.â
âIâll be waiting.â
She opened the door and held her breath. He closed the door, stood and looked at her. He put out his hand. She took it. He put out his other hand. She took that. He pulled her slowly towards him. He pulled her until she stood toe to toe with him, their hands entwined down by their sides.
He touched her cheek with his own, tenderly. He moved his head slightly up and down and then back and forth. Just like that. They stood just like that for an endless moment.
His mouth was open. He brushed his lips on her face with the slightest touch, over and over until he reached her lips. When that happened, they forgot everything.
At rehearsal Adrian missed four cues. Donalda was annoyed. âWhatâs going on with him?â
âTake a pill for Godâs sake. Heâs fine. Anyone can forget a line.â
Donalda put her hands on her hips. âHe forgot his characterâs name.â
âItâs true, Lexie,â Susie nodded. âHe seems different. Not his usual happy self.â
âAdrian might pretend to be happy in front of you but heâs often quiet by himself. He doesnât feel the need to run off at the mouth, like some.â Lexie looked at Donalda.
âIâd be in a foul mood too, if I had to live with you.â
âOh shut up, the both of you,â Susan pleaded. âYou drive me crazy.â
Lexie went to her momâs a few days later to copy out her recipe for chocolate cake.
Her mom peeled carrots by the sink. âLexie, have you spoken to your sister recently?â
She grabbed a carrot and took a bite. âWhich one? Why donât you ever say their name? I have three of them. I canât read your mind.â
âYou got out of the wrong side of the bed this morning. Thatâs not peeled by the way.â
She shrugged.
Her mother looked at her. âAre you okay, honey? You seem kind of down.â
She pouted. âI donât know.â
âSomeone needs a hug.â Her mom reached over and gave her a big one. It felt good.
âIâm all right. Which sister?â
âGabby.â
Of course. âYeah. She called the other day and hung up on me.â
Mom talked to the carrots. âShe hung up on you? Why did she do that? Did you say something to her?â
âYes, I did. She bugged me about Adrian.â She leaned over her mother. âPass me that glassâ¦stupid carrot.â
She did. âWhoâs Adrian?â
Lexie coughed. âMother. You only met him the other night.â
âOh, your weird friend, yes, of course.â
She pushed the water button on the fridge and filled her glass. âHeâs not weird, Mom.â
âIâm sure he isnât, dear, but he wasnât very animated.â
She drank her water. âNo, I guess not. He wasnât his usual self. We probably scared him to death.â
âNo doubt. Only, I was supposed to pick Gabby up
