âGuess this wasnât your day to die.â
âDang,â said Klutz, who just didnât get it. âI thought youâd win for sure, Cedric.â
Cedric laid his cue down on the table. âTime for you to leave, Red.â
âWhat if I donât want to?â
âNot an option.â
I took a step closer to him. âOh, I think it is.â
Cedric looked at the others, and then back at me, with a grin. âAre you asking to be a Wolf?â
âEveryone knows what an honor it is to be in your gang,â I said.
âAnswer the question,â said Cedric. âAre youâ¦askingâ¦to beâ¦a Wolf?â
I took a deep breath. âIâm asking to live forever. Iâm asking to feel what itâs like to be two things at onceâman, and animal. Iâm asking to be a part of the pack.â
âWhat about your grandma?â
I shrugged. âHer issues arenât mine.â
Cedric thought about it and nodded. âKeep it up, Redâyou might just get your car back.â
I smiled. âI was hoping you might say that.â Then I pulled up my sleeve, like I was at the doctorâs office getting a shot. âDo it!â I said. âGive me the bite right here, in front of everyone, so they all know Iâm one of you.â
Cedric put down his cue. âWonât work now,â he said. âOnly works on the full moon.â
I pulled down my sleeve. âGuess Iâll just have to wait.â
âFine,â Cedric said. âUntil then, youâll be a pledgeâand if you prove yourself worthy, when the time comes, weâll offer you full membership.â
âFair enough.â
âAnd if I ever think youâre not playing straight with me, youâre wolfchow.â
I nodded. âThatâs fair, too.â

WHAT?â
If Grandmaâs hair wasnât already gray, it would have gone that way when I told her that I had confronted Cedric.
âYou always said âkeep your friends close, and your enemies closer,ââ I reminded her. âNow Iâm on the inside.â
âI donât know whoâs more stupid: you, for going to Cedric Soames, or me, for telling you the truth.â She wagged a finger at me. âYou gotta leave werewolf hunting to the professionals.â
âYou werenât a professional at first,â I reminded her.
Grandma shook her head so hard, I was afraid her teeth might fly out. âI donât want my only grandson to risk getting the bite. No. I forbid it.â
âDonât worry, Grandma,â I told her. âI know what Iâm doing.â
She wasnât convinced, and although I wasnât about to admit it, neither was I. See, my performance in the Cave had been the performance of my life, but even then I knew it was only a halflie. As much as I hated the Wolves, there was that restless, impulsive part of me that wanted to know what it was like to change into something fierce: something out of control. Maybe thatâs what made me so convincing.
âItâs brilliant,â Marissa said as we sat alone, munching on chips in the antique shop one rainy afternoon. âScary, but brilliant. Do you think Cedric believes you really want to be a Wolf?â
âI think so.â
âThinking isnât good enough. You have to be sure.â
But I knew nothing could be sure. Cedric had no real reason to trust me. Then I thought of something.
âThe skull!â
âWhat about it?â
âGive it to me!â
She looked at me like I was already one of the Wolves. âNo.â
âTrust me,â I said.
She looked at me, not trusting me in the least, then reluctantly she opened a cabinet under the counter. After she looked to make sure no customers were coming in, she pulled out the skull of Xavier Soames and gently set in on the counter. It was a human skull
