smooth curve of his jaw. âThereâs not much to say.â
âYou havenât noticed anything?â
âSweetie, it could be business or any number of things. You know how Malik is,â Tree observed, hoping he sounded convincing.
Zakira appeared crestfallen. âYeah, I know how he is. But Tree, I know somethingâs not right with him.â
Tree ran one hand across his close-cut hair and grimaced. âZ, maybe he doesnât want you to worry.â
âSee, thatâs it right there!â Zakira shouted, pointing a finger at Tree. âThis may be something I need to know. I donât care what it is. I have to know. Wondering is driving me crazy.â
Tree left his chair and walked around the desk. He knelt before Zakira and pulled both her hands into one of his. âShhâ¦stop this,â he soothed. âYouâre starting to upset me.â
âIâm sorry,â she whispered, sniffling softly. âYouâre right. Maybe I am making a mountain out of a molehill.â
Tree squeezed Zakiraâs hands. âWhy donât you go home and try to calm down. Malik will come clean with you, if thereâs anything to tell.â
âYouâre right,â she said, nodding as she absently smoothed her hands across Treeâs shoulders. âLemme get out of here.â Tree stood and pushed his hands into the deep pockets of his trousers. As soon as the door closed behind Zakira, he was dialing Malikâs number.
âDoctor McNeil, Iâve got Doctor Douglass Burns on the line for you.â
âThanks, Simone,â Dr. McNeil told his secretary. âHey, Doug.â
âSed, itâs been a long time.â
âIâll say. I donât hear from you every day,â Dr. McNeil told his old colleague,
Burns chuckled. âWell, Iâm actually calling about one of your patients.â
McNeil frowned. âWhich patient?â
âMalik Badu.â
âMalik Badu? How do you know him?â
âHe called to get some information on our center here. He liked what he heard and plans on admitting himself.â
âYouâre kidding, right?â
âIâm afraid not.â
âHe hasnât mentioned it to me,â Dr. McNeil said, as though he were speaking to himself. Douglass Burns was chief of staff at The Enlightenment Center, a cancer treatment facility staffed exclusively by specialists. âI wonder if heâs told his wife yet?â
âIâm not sure about that. The reason Iâm calling is to see if youâll send me his medical records. I have his consent.â
âCertainly,â Dr. McNeil promised, still somewhat surprised. âIâll have my assistant get right on it.â
âHe seems to be quite a young man,â Dr. Burns observed.
Dr. McNeil grinned. âYouâre right, but heâs rather stubborn, full of pride, as Iâve told him several times.â
âI agree. He was very adamant about not wanting to discuss surgery or treatment. Itâs almost as if heâs afraid to get his hopes up.â
âMalik Badu is a man who hates for anyone to see him down,â Dr. McNeil noted. Especially his wife, he silently added.
Tree sighed as he reached for the phone. He had been trying to get in touch with Malik since Zakira left his office earlier that day. Unfortunately, he had been unable to contact his old friend.
Before he could pick up the phone it rang. âYeah Carrie?â
âTree, Malik is here to see you. Have you wrapped up everything?â
âYeah, thanks. Send him on in.â
Tree waited for Malik to walk in and close the door before he lit into him. âYour wife was here asking about you. When are you gonna come clean with Zakira, man?â
Malik raised his right hand and walked farther into the office. âI already decided to. Soon. But there are some things I need to take care of first.â
