courage and guidance to do the right thing. Love is so powerful, that a member of the royal family is encouraged to marry as such, instead of for shallow political gain."
Just a politician, I told myself. Empty platitudes, when he's about to marry a parliament member's daughter. Lots of politics in that, I'm sure - and he conveniently left out the must be a Dolotovyan citizen to the statement.
"That is why, today, I am to declare my love, and ask my woman to be my wife, my partner, my princess - and soon my queen." Leon walked toward the back of the float toward pretty soon to be princess.
I closed my eyes not wanting to see this. I wished for sudden death for me. What could he have possibly hoped to do other than mocking me by lying to me that anyone could ever love me?
More footsteps. "My heart, my desires, my soul has never been so sure of anything. In matters like this, the heart is what you listen to.
Eyes still shut, I felt hands close around my own. They were Leon's. I opened my eyes, and he had passed Delia entirely. He stood tall in front of me, and gestured for me to stand.
I swallowed. "What - what are you doing?"
"Beatrice Fields," he said, loudly, "I wish for you to be my partner, my princess, my queen."
My body shut down in absolute and complete shock right there.
"What are you doing Leon?" A German voice spoke up, in high enough volume only for us to hear it. "You know the law. You can't marry foreigners."
Nadya stood, as shocked as I was. She wasn't alone. Delia was shocked at being overlooked, and my two friends were silent. It's not every day your best buddy is proposed to by a prince.
Leon was the only one coherent. So he spoke, loud, for the capital to hear. "Beatrice Fields is an American. This raises concerns about the law passed fifty years ago - The Dolotovya Purity Act. It insisted that the royal family had to find their love within our borders."
My brain started to work again, but I was still just so overwhelmed. What do I say? Do I say anything?
"The Act was passed yes, by vote of the parliament. Before my father ascended to the throne. By Dolotovyan tradition, when he died a tragic death when I was only ten years old, the crown passed to his brother due to my young age."
    Nadya raised an eyebrow.
Leon simply kept up the history. "My Uncle. He never produced a child with his wife - Nadya, who is with me today."
"What does this have to do with Alek, Leon?"
Leon simply raised a hand. "My father was a good man. He wanted what was best for his family, including his brother. For his sister-in-law."
The crowd was entranced, hanging onto his, or the interpreter’s, every word. All through his speech, his eyes never left mine. His hands held me steady.
"For Crown Princess Nadya had a secret that would bring scandal to the family, and cause much heartache."
Nadya ran up behind Leon and pulled his arm. "You can't tell them that, Leon. You can't."
He spoke lowly to his aunt. "Don't worry, Teya. I mean no harm."
"You can't tell them. I've worked too hard to keep it a secret, Leon."
Leon took a deep breath, before resuming his speech. "Princess Nadya is not of Dolotovyan birth. She was born in Germany."
A stunned silence washed over the crowd.
"My Uncle Alek - he loved her so much. He was going to relinquish his family name for her. Even as the law said they could not wed, they could not be separated. So they lied. Secretly, Nadya was said to be a native born Dolotovyan, born in a tiny village without a name or the ability to produce birth certificates."
"What on earth are you doing, Leon?" There were tears in Nadya's eyes. For the first time, since he began, he broke from me to comfort his aunt.
"My father foresaw that this could potentially become an issue as his brother would be next in line," Leon said. He took a moment of silence. I assumed he had only warm memories of his father. "On his deathbed, he made one last edict to prevent potential heartache."
    Nadya was sobbing,
