so she hung up and rang again, staring at the number pad and speaking them out loud as she dialled. The same voice.
God, I hope everythingâs OK.
âEr, hullo, is Max there? Max Fyfield.â There was interference on the line. She tapped the receiver against her hand. It wasnât interference, it was background noise. Music, muffled. Voices, many.
âHullo?â said the Scotsman.
âMax Fyfield?â stressed Polly, trying not to shout. It sounded like the receiver was dropped. âHullo?â she said. âHullo? Max?â
Click.
The line was dead.
She dialled again, distressed and a little angry. Who was that man? How dare he!
âHullo?â
âThank God,â said Polly, eyes to the heavens, âDom, itâs me. Max there?â
âHullo? Oh Polly! Hi! Hold on.
Max
! Hold on,â said Dom, disappearing with an unpromising clatter to locate his brother.
âPolly?â
âMax â hullo, I was er. You said youâd ââ
Suddenly she wanted to cry.
Donât be so silly.
Why do you want to cry?
I donât know. I donât want to be here. I feel frightened. It all feels too fragile.
âSorry,â Max rushed. âOh God, so sorry. I, er, well actually I forgot. Hey
you
â get the Osmonds
off
the turntable!
And
Slade. Kool and the Gang can stay. Polly? There you are â I was going to call you earlier but Dominic had me running errands and opening wine. Dom!
Dom!
The chilli â the coffee table. God that was close.â
âMax,â Polly asked, trying to control the shake in her voice, âwhatâs happening? Whatâs going on?â
I feel lonely. Iâm frightened.
What of?
âDom has a few friends round,â Max explained lightly.
Precisely.
âAnyone I know?â
Whatâs wrong with that? Why do I feel shaky?
âEr, donât think so.â
âMeg?â
I can hear a woman laughing. Heâs just covered the mouthpiece with his hand. Why? Whyâs he done that?
âMeg?â Polly repeated, staring around Kateâs kitchen, the people on the fridge; realizing that she was, essentially, amongst strangers. Alone.
Iâm alone. Over here. Over there. I just delude myself that Iâm allowed into peopleâs spheres, that theyâll make me part of their world, their family.
âMegan was here earlier but she had to leave as she was meeting Jen Carter for a drink.â
Iâve been replaced. Oh, most wicked haste.
âMax â why didnât
you
phone
me
?â Polly consciously let slip into baby voice. âLike you promised?â
âIâm sorry Button,â he said, his voice distant (
he sounds distant
), âI forgot. I was busy.â
No!
Yes â anyway, Polly, who is it whoâs been too preoccupied even to think of him much, let alone miss him at all? Were you expecting life in London to be frozen in time until your return?
âPolly?â
âYes,â she said in a small voice, âIâm still here.â
âIâd better go now, this isnât the best time for a chat, is it? Thereâs chilli on the carpet and Dominicâs off his face. God, heâs out on the balcony. Doing opera. I must go â Iâll call you soon, promise. âKay?â
ââKay.â
What else could she say?
âLove you,â Max cooed.
Donât say that.
ââKay,â she said, chewing the inside of her cheek. She replaced the handset and stared blankly at the fridge of smiles.
âYou OK?â asked Kate, understanding now the provenance of Pollyâs deepening eye colour.
âYup,â said Polly, a little more croakily than she would have liked, âabsolutely fine.â
Kate offered Polly a cherry tomato. She bit it and winced as the delicious, tart juice caused a stab of sharpness to zip along her jaw. She swallowed. Hard.
âAll set?â Kate asked.
âDo you
