prayed that Rhi and Brody werenât about to appear through the tent flaps hand in hand. âShe sang a great set, but she was pretty tired when it was over. She, uh, said to tell you sheâd see you tomorrow.â
Maxâs eyes were fixed on two girls kissing in the shadows outside the marquee. âIs this, like, a lesbian wedding or something?â
âYes,â said Polly. When would Max get the hint? âSee you tomorrow, OK?â
Max obediently turned round and headed for the street. There was still a puzzled look on his face. Polly breathed a sigh of relief.
âNow what?â
Polly spun round, her hand on her heart. âOllie! You gave me the fright of my life! What are you doing, sneaking up on me like that?â
âI followed you,â Ollie said. He was looking hurt. âI wanted to know what was so important that it took you away.â He gazed after Maxâs disappearing back. âSo what were you doing out here talking to Max when youâre supposed to be dancing with me?â
âIt was Rhi and Brody,â Polly explained. âI had to get Max out of the way before he saw them together.â
âRhi and Brody?â Ollie repeated. âRhiâs going out with Max, Polly. Whatâs Brody got to do with this?â
âMax isnât right for Rhi,â Polly said in a rush. âHeâs a cheat and a liar. I want her to be happy. She and Brody are perfect for each other.â
Ollie was beginning to frown now. âMax is my friend, Polly,â he said. âI know heâs a handful, but what gives you the right to meddle in his life?â
Polly was determined that Ollie should understand. âI want Rhi to be happy. Sheâs had too much sadness in her life, Ollie. Doesnât she deserve someone better than Max?â
His eyes sparked. He looked angry. âFirst you have to be there for Eve. Then you have to set up Lila and Josh. And now youâre sabotaging Max and Rhiâs relationship?â
It didnât sound too good when Ollie put it like that, Polly realized. Maybe he wasnât the only insensitive one.
âTheyâre my friends,â she said feebly. âIâm just trying to take care of them.â
Ollieâs expression softened. âSomeone should take care of you for a change.â
His face was very close out here in the moonlight. Polly felt a little breathless.
âAre you volunteering for the job?â she asked.
Ollie pulled her closer. âIf youâll have me,â he said. âYes.â
A strain of music floated out of the marquee, into the dark gardens of Heartwell Manor.
âCan we have that dance now?â Ollie said.
Polly laid her head on Ollieâs chest, snuggling into him. He folded his arms around her back. The music was dreamy, almost otherworldly, spilling into the warm night around them. As if it were being played for them alone.
âI always loved this song,â Ollie murmured, his lips close to Pollyâs ear.
âMe too,â Polly whispered back.
Ollieâs lips were trailing from her ear across her cheek now. Little warm kisses, one after the other. Pollyâs skin tingled all over.
Nothing else matters , she thought. Ollieâs going to kiss me â¦
There was a clattering sound, the crunch of shoes on gravel. Polly jerked back, her mouth inches from Ollieâs.
âThere you are, Polly!â said Eve, putting her hands on her hips. âIâve been looking everywhere for you.â
TWELVE
âCome on,â said Eve briskly. âYouâre needed.â
Pollyâs face was aflame. She wanted the ground to swallow her up. Couldnât Eve see that sheâd interrupted a really important moment? Didnât Eve feel any embarrassment at all?
âHey,â Ollie said indignantly. âWeâre busy here, Eve. Do you mind?â
âSorry, Ollie, but this canât wait.â Eve seemed
