family.
âYes,â Jessie nodded.
âBut all these pranks were directed against Sarah,â Violet pointed out. âItâs Sarahâs costume someone ruined, Sarahâs name that was crossed off the audition sheet â¦â
âAnd Sarahâs props and script that were taken,â Jessie finished.
Henry stood and stretched. âThe question is, why wouldnât someone want Sarah in the show?â he asked.
âWell, Melody wouldnât want her,â Benny noted.
âNo,â Jessie agreed. âShe wouldnât.â
âAnd Richard wouldnât want her in the play, either, because she takes too much attention away from him,â Violet pointed out.
âThatâs true,â Henry said, nodding.
âI guess if weâre naming suspects, we canât forget the woman outside in the fur coat,â said Violet.
âOr the man in the big white car,â Benny remarked.
âYes,â Henry agreed. âI wonder why he didnât want to go backstage to find Sarah himself. No one else would have taken his parking place. No other cars were even parked near his.â
âI hadnât thought of that,â Violet said slowly. She suddenly stood up and looked around the large backstage area. âBy the way, where is Soo Lee?â
âI donât know,â Benny said. âSoo Lee! Soo Lee, where are you?â he called loudly.
âIâm in here,â answered Soo Lee from the costume room. âI think I found something.â
The Aldens rushed to her side. âThereâs a big trunk in this closet,â Soo Lee told them. âLook whatâs inside!â
âSoo Lee! You found a spare bulb,â Henry almost shouted. âI wonât have to reset the lights.â Henry gave his cousin a big hug. âAll we have to do now is replace this light and weâre set for tomorrow.â
âThe show will go on,â said Benny happily.
On the night of the performance, Jessie, Mrs. McGregor, and Benny arrived early. They needed plenty of time to change and put on their stage makeup.
Soo Lee came into the auditorium with Henry and Violet. She was all dressed up to be an usher in a red velvet dress and black patent leather shoes.
âI canât thank you enough for finding that light, Soo Lee,â Jim said when he saw her.
Soo Lee smiled.
âGoodness, some people are here already,â Violet said softly, looking toward the door.
âOh, I better go seat them,â Soo Lee said as she took a stack of programs in her arms.
âWeâll be backstage,â Henry called to Soo Lee.
From his post by the lighting board, Henry could peek behind the thick red curtain and watch the audience. He was the first to notice Grandfather seated near the front row.
Benny soon came to join Henry. Benny was all dressed up in his Munchkin outfit â pale blue pants and a matching jacket.
âLook, you can see Grandfather,â Henry said as he stood near the curtain. Benny peeked out into the auditorium. He looked back at Henry in surprise. âThe woman in the fur coat is sitting next to him.â
âWhat?â Henry left his post by the lighting board to look for himself. Sure enough, Grandfather was helping the woman off with her coat. âTheyâre talking like they know each other,â Henry said, surprised. âI wonder who that woman could be?â
While Henry stood behind the curtain talking to Benny, he heard some rustling noises behind him. A man wearing a tweed coat was opening the fuse box near the lighting board. He couldnât see Henry or Benny as they were hidden from him by the curtain.
âHey!â Henry shouted to the man. âWhat are you doing?â
The man whirled around holding one of the fuses. Henry recognized him. He was the man heâd seen in the big white car. Suddenly, Sarah appeared in the wings with Jessie, Violet, and Jim. She was all dressed in
