werenât supposed to say that!â Melody said loudly.
Henry checked all the overhead lights. âThe other lights seem fine,â he reported to Jim after rehearsal. Jim nodded as if he were still in a daze. Indeed, he looked so tired, Henry volunteered to stay late to reset the lighting board.
âWeâll help you, Henry,â Jessie said. Violet, Benny, and Soo Lee nodded.
âMaybe weâll be able to find another light,â Violet suggested.
âI wouldnât count on it.â Jim sounded discouraged. âI think we better just redesign the lighting as Henry and I discussed. I know youâll do a good job â all of you,â Jim added with a grateful look at the Aldens.
When everyone had left, Jessie opened the door to bring some air into the backstage area. She poked her head outside. Something she saw made her quickly shut the door.
âWhatâs the matter?â Violet asked.
âThat woman,â Jessie whispered. Violet looked puzzled.
âRemember the woman we saw the other night in the fur coat?â
Violet nodded. âYou mean sheâs outside the theater again?â
âYes,â Jessie was still whispering. âSheâs just waiting in the street.â
âDid she see you?â Violet wondered.
Jessie shrugged her shoulders. âIâm not sure.â
Violet shivered a little. âItâs spooky back here at night,â she observed. The girls looked at the large sets stacked along the wall â Dorothyâs simple farmhouse, the witchâs castle, even the Yellow Brick Road glowed eerily under the light of one small bulb overhead.
Henry came backstage with Benny. âIâm starting to change the lighting so it wonât depend so much on that big light we lost.â
âCouldnât you wait a little longer?â Jessie asked. âWe might find a replacement.â
Henry looked at his watch. âWell, all right, but itâs already nine oâclock.â
Jessie nodded. âI know.â Quickly she told her brothers about seeing the mysterious woman in the fur coat.
Henry shook his head. âI donât know what to think. So many things donât seem right about this play.â
âI know what you mean,â Jessie answered. She walked over to another storage closet. âNothing but brooms and mops in here,â she announced.
Henry sat down on the steps. âI really think someone tampered with that light on purpose,â he said grimly.
âSo do I.â Jessieâs voice sounded muffled from inside the closet. âBut who would do such a thing?â
âWhy would someone in the cast try to ruin the show for everyone?â Violet remarked.
âWe have to think about this,â Henry said. âFirst of all, whoever is doing these things may not be in the cast at all. Who do we suspect besides Sarah and Melody?
âRichard.â Violet and Jessie both answered at once. They came to join Henry on the steps.
âWe did catch him fiddling with Violetâs poster,â Jessie reminded them.
âWell, we didnât exactly catch him,â Violet pointed out. âBut who else would want to make Richardâs name bigger?â
Jessie and Henry both nodded.
âWhat about the Tinman?â Benny asked as he came out of the costume room. âDonât you think itâs strange he never takes his costume off?â
âWell, yes,â Jessie agreed reluctantly. âStill, I canât believe heâd be responsible for ruining costumes and sets. Heâs so serious about his acting.â
âYou could say the same about Sarah,â Henry reminded them.
âYes.â Jessie said slowly. âIâve been wondering about Sarah ever since the play started. Sheâs so secretive.â
âDonât forget about that folder she didnât want us to see,â Benny reminded his sister as he joined his
