dead look in her eyes finally made me stop.
I let go of her head. “Honey?”
    She remained still.
    With a shaky hand, I placed a
finger to her neck, confirming she was dead. I pushed away from her, staring
down at the blonde woman, too stunned to do anything else.
Frano’s voice broke the silence. He
was calling out Rita’s name. My gaze shot to the open door. I raced over to it,
closing it as quietly as possibly. Frano called out again, his voice drawing
closer. Needing to hide Honey, I grabbed her arms and dragged her into the
bathroom, my heart pounding faster than a Ferrari at top speed. I shut her in,
then quickly stripped off my bloodied nightie and kicked it under the bed. Now
naked, I climbed in next to Jagger, hiding my hands under the covers.
A knocking sounded, then Frano called
out for Jagger. My thoughts went to the blood on the carpet. If Frano saw it,
I’d be hung, drawn, and quartered. Frano called out Jagger’s name again. Jumping
out of bed, I grabbed some of Jagger’s clothes off his cabinet and ran to cover
the blood on the floor. I dumped them on top of it, then raced back to the bed.
The door cracked open as I reached for the sheet.
    I yelled out, “I’m naked!”
    The door stopped opening. “Is
Jagger in there?” Frano asked.
“He’s fast asleep, he took a
sedative.”
    “Have you seen Rita?”
“No, you woke me up. What’s wrong?”
    “Rita’s not in my room.”
A shout came from below, making me
freeze. More voices followed, then the pounding of boots resounded throughout
the house. Frano called out, asking what was happening, his voice growing
distant, suggesting he was heading down the staircase. Knowing the soldier had
been found, I ran back into the bathroom and started scrubbing his blood off me.
Once clean, I went to Jagger’s side, giving him a shake. I knew I had no chance
of successfully hiding Honey without him; I just needed to convince him to help
me.
    “Jagger, wake up.”
    He moaned, but didn’t wake.
    I shook him again. “Jagger.”
    Again, he didn’t wake.
Needing to speed things up, I
slapped him hard. His eyes shot open, his startled yell following a second
later. I placed a hand over his mouth. “Sssh, don’t make a noise.”
He blinked at me, looking both hurt
and confused.
“I need your help. I walked in on
Honey sexually abusing you, so I killed her.” I continued talking, praying he
believed me. “I also killed someone else, a soldier. He raped me in Frano’s
office. I stabbed him with a letter opener, then ran into your room, which is
when I saw Honey abusing you. After what happened to me, I didn’t think, I just
went nuts.”
He pushed to a sitting position,
looking stunned, as though he wasn’t fully comprehending what I was saying.
    “I dragged Honey into the
bathroom,” I said. “Please help me. The Landi will kill me if they find out
what I’ve done.”
He pushed out of bed, the man
naked. He turned to the bathroom, but stopped as Frano called out my name. He went
to the door and opened it a fraction, sticking his head around the corner.
    “What?” Jagger asked.
    “Rita’s escaped. She killed a
soldier to get out.” Frano went silent for a moment. He was probably trying to
compose himself, no doubt devastated over his lover’s supposed betrayal. “I
need you to look after the remaining women while I search for her with the
Landi. I can’t let them hurt her.”
Jagger nodded. “I will look after
the women.”
    “ Grazie mille .”
“No problem.” Jagger shut the door
and headed for the bathroom. I followed him in. He bobbed down in front of
Honey, feeling her pulse. Sighing, he shook his head. “I’m such a fool. I
thought she wanted to help me, but like everyone she fucked me over.” He pushed
up and turned to me. “She drugged me last night. I heard everything she said.
She was going to set you up for Rita’s disappearance.” He placed a hand on my
arm, giving it a gentle squeeze. “I’m in your debt, and
