making me grin.
“Times like these were my favorite,” I answer, thinking about all the drives to nowhere we would take.
When we pull up to his mom’s house, I see her come outside. “My sweet girl!” she squeals, pulling me into a hug. She kisses my cheeks, offering me a glass of sweet tea. As we walk inside, I see the bright smile on Jax’s face.
“My dear, to what do I owe the pleasure?” she asks, ushering me into the kitchen.
“Well, after an incident at the diner, I got the afternoon off. Luckily, Jax was there to help me deal with what happened.” I look at the ground. I’m not sure what he’s told her yet, but I hope he has at least warned her.
“Oh, my sweet girl. Please don’t let what one stuck-up little girl said hurt you. My son told me what you had to go through on your own, and I don’t ever want either of you to have to go through something like that again. That girl needs to be taught some manners.”
I give her a strange look. How does she know what happened at the diner?
She shrugs and says, “Small town gossip.”
“Thank you, Mary.” I smile as she hands me a glass.
“Now, Jaxson, don’t you have some work to tend to?” She glares at Jax. I giggle at the face he makes. Walking over to her, he mutters, then kisses her cheek.
When he walks over to me, he wraps his arms around me and whispers in my ear, “I should have told you she knew. I’ll be back in a little while. Tonight, you are all mine.”
“I hope you can outdo your last first date,” I say with a cheeky grin.
He kisses my lips and grabs my ass. “Let’s just say that you will never need another first date.”
He kisses me once more before walking out the front door. When it closes, Mary puts a hand on my arm. “I’m so sorry for what you went through. If we would have known you were pregnant, we would have never asked him to stay. He should have been with you.” I bite my cheek to keep from crying. I want to remember her and talk about her, but it’s just too painful sometimes.
“I’m sorry I didn’t tell anyone about her until now.” I turn to face her. “I was so ashamed that I couldn’t even keep her from dying. I just wanted her so bad, it crushed me. She was the last piece of him I had.”
She pulls me into a hug. “Sweetie, he never got over you. After you left, he spent most of the time angry at me and his father. He wanted to be in New York with you, but when he realized how bad his father was getting, he changed his attitude.”
“I hate that he was angry with you both,” I say, wiping my eyes.
“Oh, it was nothing we couldn’t handle. He’s always been crazy about you and we knew he was going to hurt, so we let him be angry for a while. He even went to New York to see you, but when he got back, he had changed. He started to party and sleep around with all those little hussies in town. He wasn’t the son we raised and we know part of it was because we asked him to stay.”
“He said he saw me with someone else when he came to New York. He didn’t even tell me he was there. If I would have known, I would have dropped everything to be with him.”
We walk over to the couch and sit down. “You two were so in love, I was afraid it would have fizzled. Many young kids don’t stay in love after college nowadays. I didn’t want that for either of you. Truth be told, I was kind of glad you broke up when you did. I was happy you’d both have the chance to date other people and see if you really were meant to be. I now know that you both wasted so much time being apart, you’ll never get that back.”
I flash her a small smile. “No matter how many people I went out with in New York, no one ever compared to Jaxson. He will always be the first boy to ever kiss me, the best first date, my best friend, and the father to our little angel who’s looking down on us from heaven. She probably has her grandpa wrapped around her little finger,
