wake up. âDamn, now I gotta go pee. Still, you need to come ride with a sistah. Iâll make it worth your while. Think about it while I go pee.â
Neema hurried toward her bathroom, already hiking up the floral hem of her sundress. She made a mad rush of doing her business and washing her hands. Her perfect lips were just form-ing the words, âLetâs raise up outta here,â when she heard the distinct click of a key turning in the lock of her front door. âWho the hellâ¦â She froze in place; eyes wide and trained on the door.
âGirl, what is it?â Kaykay whispered loudly, noticing her face. She jumped; scared.
Neema felt her heart speed to a drum beat as her front door slowly opened and in stepped Topps like he owned the place. He had that cocky look on his face that she couldnât stand. Those cold, dark eyes of his were staring straight through her.
âWhatâs up, ladies? Looks like Mister Topps got here right on time for the party.â
EIGHT
âT opps! How the hell you get a key to my place?â Neema tried to play it off like it was no big deal, even though she had posed the question. After all, he did pay her rent from time to time. The times when he didnât, the money she had stolen from him did.
âI been had a key.â
Neema rethought things and decided not to play a damn thing off. She was mad that he had barged in to her crib. âWell, a nigga coulda told me that shit. You stepping in here unannounced ainât right.â
She sniffed to keep her nose from losing some of the blow sheâd flown earlier. Honest to God, she was getting tired of this man constantly checking her like she was some lowlife criminal. âI mean, I know you sometimes pay the rent on this mutha, but damn, boo.â
âIâll keep that in mind.â
Screw you, she thought. Neema headed to the kitchen, came back with three bottles. âHere bitch, have some water.â She tossed one bottle to Kaykay before placing one on the table and shooting Topps an irritated look. âYou have a key to my crib; I should have one to yours. Thatâs how I feel about it.â
âYeah, right.â Topps closed and locked the deadbolt behind him, then put the chain on for extra assurance. âI was in the neighborhood and spotted your ride parked outside. Thought Iâd stop by. Hope Iâm not disturbing you ladies.â
âNah, boo. You not disturbing nothing. I ran to the crib to use the restroom. You know how I am about using public facilities. I was on my way back out.â She had to admit, he looked good in those super-creased jeans and dark knit shirt. Gulping water, she watched him.
âOn your way to deliver? No shit?â He walked slowly over to the table where he spotted her tote bag with his product in it. He snatched it up.
âBoo, I said I was on my way out. I had to pee real bad.â
âWhen I talked to you earlier, you were on your way back from dropping off. Ainât that what you said?â
âYeah, but, that was because I had to pee, baby. You know how you feel about public restrooms. They full of germs.â
âTrue dat. But still, you lied to me, Nee.â He took his bag of product out for a good examination. The weight felt about the same, but that didnât mean shit. âI know you not standing there saying that you drove to Hollywood but had to come all the way back to this mutha just to take a piss.â
Kaykay stood up, fumbling for her purse and keys. âUh, look, girlfriend, I see you have some business to deal with, so Iâll give you two some privacy.â
âSit yoâ bitch ass down!â Toppsâ eyes dared defiance.
âNigga, who you calling a bitch? I ainât yoâ bitch. You must have me confused withâ¦â
âAnd shut the fuck up!â He pulled out a twenty-two, one of his favorites because it didnât make a lot of noise, in
