about here. Not some hottie hunk.
âI ended up there because we went on theski lift together. Iâd never been on a ski lift before so he offered to show me how it works. My heart was pounding so hard when I realized that the lift kept moving and that we were supposed to get off it by skiing. I donât think I could have done it if he hadnât held my arm. After he skied down the slope, he took the lift back up and we rode it down together.â
âSounds like a regular Prince Charming.â
âHe was,â she said, her cheeks turning red. âAnd I liked watching him ski. Heâs really good. I was impressed. Iâll never be able to ski down a trail like that.â
âSure you will,â I said.
âToday I didnât actually ski on anything other than the bunny slope, but at least I graduated from ski class.â She jerked her thumb at Leah. âKlutz over here has to take the class again tomorrow.â
Leah wiggled her eyebrows, not at all offended. âYou bet. Ian is such a hottie. Heâs Australian and has the most delicious accent. I adore it. He promised to give me private lessons if I donât do any better tomorrow.â Sheleaned forward and whispered, âI wonât do any better tomorrow.â
âHeâs that hot, huh?â
âHis presence melts snow.â
I laughed. âIâve got to see this guy.â
âJust remember that I had first dibs on him.â
I watched the marshmallows bobbing in my hot chocolate. âI guess Brad hung around with Cynthia all day.â
âLike a sliver of metal against a magnet.â
I grimaced. âSheâs too old for him. Sheâs gotta be like, I donât know, twenty-four.â
âAt least,â Leah said.
I wondered what Brad really saw in her, other than her tight pants and too-small sweaters.
âWhenever she talks, she sounds like sheâs on the verge of hyperventilating,â Allie said.
I laughed. âShe does take heavy breathing to the extreme.â
âYou wouldnât have liked seeing the way she sat on Bradâs lap in your brotherâs SUV, âpracticingâ for tomorrow when youâd be with us and there wouldnât be enough seats.â
âGreat,â I mumbled.
My parents had given Sam the SUV whenheâd graduated from high school. It gave him freedom that I didnât yet have. He and his buds had been able to drive up while my friends and I had flown.
Of course, weâd left from different destinations as well. Allie, Leah, and me from home, the guys from college. The university was about six hours from where we lived, so I completely understood Sam not wanting to come and get me, even if he had known Iâd be there. Besides, I wouldnât have wanted to be in a vehicle with him for fifteen hours, anyway. Fifteen minutes with him was a stretch of my patience.
âI think Iâm just going to have to give up on Brad,â I muttered.
âMaybe not,â Leah said. âWhatâs Cynthia got that you donât?â
âLots of curves.â I wasnât totally flat, but my chest resembled hills, while Cynthiaâs looked more like the Grand Tetons. And my hips didnât exactly flare out, not that I wanted them to.
âLook, weâre going to that party tonight,â Leah said. âWeâll all look our best, and before the night is over, maybe Brad will come around to noticing that you have a lot more to offerpersonality-wise than Cynthia. And you donât have any trouble talking and breathing at the same time.â
âI doubt heâll notice me.â
âDonât be such a negative Nancy,â Leah said.
I rolled my eyes. âHave you been talking to Aunt Sue?â Aunt Sue had all kinds of quaint descriptions: Sad Sally, Happy Hannah.
Leah grinned. âCome on. So Brad spent the day with Cynthiaââ
âLetâs not forget that he also
