only person you want, you should make it work with her.”
“Even after everything she did?”
She gave me a firm look. “In case you didn’t know, relationships are never fairy tales. We don’t meet someone, fall in love, and live happily ever after. Between falling in love and happily ever after, it’s work, tears, pain, and heartache. I guess this is a wake up call for you.”
I thought about her words for a long time. No relationship was perfect. All my friends struggled in the relationships they had, but they kept working hard because they loved the person they were with. And I’d seen them do some pretty fucked up things to each other. “You think I should go back to her?”
“I didn’t say that,” she said simply. “But a bombshell just threw herself at you and you couldn’t even get a hard-on.” She had a smile on her face. “I think that speaks pretty loud.”
I smirked then looked at the ground. “I’m so sorry I did this to you.”
“No, don’t apologize,” she said simply. “There’s no need for it.”
“Really?”
She leaned in and kissed me again. “If you don’t get back together with her, and you finally picture yourself with other women, I’d like a chance. A real one.”
“I’d love t o take you out again—and get naked.”
She smiled then kissed me . “You’re very special, Cortland. If this girl doesn’t get that, then fuck her. But if she does know that, which only you can tell, then give her another chance. Either way, she’s a very lucky girl for capturing your heart so strongly.”
This girl was so cool. Why couldn’t I just fall for her? “I know I’ve sa id some mean things about her, but there are a lot of things I love about her, too many things for me to name off. But there’s so much good to her. It’s just been buried under all the bad.”
She gave me a fond look. “Think it over, Cortland. I hope everything works out for you, together or apart.”
I squeezed her thigh. “For what its worth, if I weren’t so depressed I would have fucked your brains out.”
She chuckled. “Well, of course. Who wouldn’t?”
I cupped her face and kissed her, wanting to prove that I did find her attractive. “I’m not sure why you’re single, but I know you’re going to be picked up soon. And whoever he is, he’s a lucky guy.”
“Maybe it will be you someday.” She had a twinkle in her eyes.
I wasn’t sure about that. The only person I could picture myself with was Monnique. “Maybe.”

Today was my birthday. My thirtieth birthday. Yuck.
I never cared about age, but I never liked celebrating my birthday. There was no particular reason why. I just didn’t like all the attention being focused on me. All the gifts, the celebration, and the cake was—old news. I didn’t care for it.
As far as I knew, Cassandra had no idea. And I wanted to keep it that way. I didn’t want her to throw a party for me or treat me in a special way. Just having her in my life was a gift in itself. And I knew my dumbass brother wouldn’t even remember. The only thing he cared about these days was knocking up his wife.
Fine by me.
Cassandra left the apartment early this morning because she wanted to hit the gym. I wasn’t sure why because we usually went together after work, but she seemed adamant about it. Now that she was pregnant, I was more protective of her. I didn’t want her to go anywhere alone, but I stopped myself from being controlling. I knew Cassandra didn’t like that. And I respect her.
Just a little after the morning began, she walked into my office.
I was glad to see her. I really wanted to get laid. We usually had sex first thing in the morning, but that didn’t work out today.
“I b rought you a coffee.” She set it on my desk. “I figured you didn’t have time to get your own.”
“Thanks, baby. But you didn’t have to do that. I’m the one who should be doing things for you.” I grabbed her hip and pulled her closer to
