âLoud noise. An explosion maybe. Iâm not sure. I had no idea what was going on. Didnât realize what was happening until I got home and saw your boy John on the news beating up on that big alien guy. Citrus Ramen or whatever.â
âSetrákus Ra.â
âOr whatever ,â I repeat. âAnyway, I havenât had a signal or anything since then. Iâm sure sheâs fine. Sheâs tough. Well, not really. Sheâs the nicest, most loving person ever. But sheâs a survivor.â
Sam looks like he wants to say something, but Iâm so physically and mentally and emotionally tired that I just hold a hand up and walk away. If we keep talking about this, Iâm going to break down.
âDanielaâ,â Sam starts.
âHere, nerd,â I say, holding a granola bar Iâve just found on the ground out to him, cutting him off.
He looks at it for a second.
âWait. Why am I a nerd? Why does everyone assume that?â
I shrug. âJust a guess. Youâve got that vibe coming off of you.â
He looks like heâs about to protest, but he doesnât. Instead, he takes the snack. âYou donât like these?â
âNo,â I lie.
I stretch and yawn. Sam does too like itâs contagious. Iâm so exhausted that Iâm wondering if I could use my newfound powers to float myself back to the car where John is.
âWe should head back,â Sam says. âGet some sleep. Weâre no good if our energyâs zapped.â
âI canât believe Iâm about to sleep in a subway car.â I wonder what Mom would say.
âThereâs a whole other half of the train we havenât gone through. We can hit it in the morning. Then we should get aboveground and see . . .â
He doesnât finish. I donât ask what heâs wondering. Iâve got too many questions of my own going through my head. Too many grisly images of what might be happening on the surface.
I shake my head. We start back the way we came.
âYou were at the UN earlier?â I ask.
âYeah. It was crazy.â
âHow come I didnât see you fighting?â
âHey, I was doing my best,â he says. âBesides, I didnâthave these Legacies yet. And I havenât exactly trained with guns that much.â
âLegacies?â I ask. âJohn used that word when we were on the street. Is that what you call the telekinesis and his light-up hands?â
âYeah.â
I twist my lips a bit. âItâs kind of a dumb name. Waitâoh shitâdid someone die for me to get these? Did I inherit, like, alien ghost powers? Thatâs messed up.â
âUh, I donât think so,â Sam says. âI mean, I think theyâre passed down from those Elders I mentioned earlier for John and the Loric, but as far as weâre concerned . . .â He shrugs.
âSo you donât have any idea why we were chosen?â I ask as we step across the gap between two cars. âWhatâs so special about us?â
He shakes his head, and I can tell that this has been on his mind.
âMan,â he says, âIâve been asking myself that all day. Honestly, until we met you I thought I was the only one.â His voice gets a little quieter. âI thought maybe I was being rewarded for helping the Loric.â
âWell, I sure as hell wasnât being rewarded for anything, unless this is some kind of weirdo prize for finally getting my grades up in school.â I think about this for a second. âGuess that really doesnât matter anymore.â Harlem and the diner and my apartment seemso far away. Was I really sulking over headphones earlier today?
âWhatever the reason, Iâm going to use them.â Sam nods as he talks, like heâs telling me the most important thing in the world. âNow I can finally help everyone else. I wonât be stuck on the sidelines. I can
