piece of paper out of the pocket of her bag. âLook â another one.â She was holding it as though she expected it to bite her.
âArenât you going to read it?â Megan asked interestedly.
âI suppose so â Iâd rather just throw it away. It might tell me who itâs from though, I guess.â She unfolded the piece of paper gingerly.
Â
SEE YOU AT THE VALENTINEâS BALL!
WILL YOU DANCE WITH ME?
Â
Katie handed it to Megan. âAnother good reason not to go to that thing,â she said disgustedly. âBut Becky and Bel made me promise.â
âStill no clue who itâs from?â Megan peered over Katieâs shoulder at the note.
âNope â anyone could know Iâm going to the ball. Belâs been going on about it every time sheâs opened her mouth for the last week. What am I going to do? Iâd almost forgotten about the last note, it was more than a week ago now. I was hoping whoever it was had given up or something.â
âSo at least youâll probably find out who it is at the dance,â said Megan thoughtfully.
âGreat,â Katie muttered. âThen I just have to tell them to get lost. Thatâll be fun.â
Â
The note put a damper on Katieâs excitement over the victory, and she trailed out to the car not looking like someone whoâd scored two goals and been instrumental in two more.
Mum saw her coming and put on a sympathetic face. âHow did it go?â
âOh, we won. I scored two goals. Whatâs for tea?â
Mrs Ryan looked slightly blank. Sheâd had understanding and reassuring mother all prepared, and now the wind had been taken out of her sails rather. âUmmm, fish pie. Er, is everything all right? Did you have an argument with Megan?â
Katie looked thoughtfully at her mother. Was everything all right? Huh. How would Mum react if she told her what was really on her mind: âWell, I think Belâs boyfriend is two-timing her with one of our worst enemies, some idiotâs been sending me lovenotes and I havenât a clue who it is, and I think you might be going to date the father of the boy who deliberately crippled me last term. Hmmm, so no, not really.â
Maybe it wasnât a very good ideaâ¦
Chapter Eight
Katie decided that she just had to slog through Thursday and Friday at school. It was so hard to be normal when she felt like she was holding so much back from the people she usually confided in. At least by the end of Friday evening one of her problems should be solved, although it wasnât going to be much fun doing it. How did you tell somebody whoâd been sending you love letters that you just werenât interested? Katie was almost tempted to ask Annabel, but she seemed to be following Josh around all the time at school, and at home she was obviously just daydreaming about the next time she saw him â Katie wasnât sure any advice from her would be worth much right now. Even Becky and Saima were getting a bit tired of Annabelâs one topic of conversation. Maybe the sleepover on Saturday would be a good time to sound out Bel about how she reckoned everything was going with him. After all, how long was Katie supposed to let her go on being messed around?
As for the whole Mum thing, Katie hadnât got a clue what to do. Sheâd noticed that Max had been behaving a bit weirdly recently. Could he have guessed what was going on as well? In geography on Friday afternoon she caught him staring at her with a really strange expression on his face. She was used to him giving her evil looks, or sneering at her, but this was different. He looked almost frightened, and when he realized sheâd noticed him he ducked his head right down and stared at his book for the next ten minutes without looking up. There was no way that was normal Max behaviour. Katie felt even more worried. When it was just her and Megan with vague
