see you tonight?”
“I’m sorry. Sam’s community theater group has a play at seven o’clock. I’m on the costume and cleanup committee.”
    “Where?” he asked.
    “The high school.”
    “I’ll meet you around seven.”
Her chest tightened. “You don’t have to.”
    “I want to.”
She walked to the bathroom. “Do you really want to watch a bunch of kids flub their lines and massacre Romeo and Juliet ?”
    “If that’s where you’ll be.”
Warmth seeped to her toes. If you’re not careful, you’ll fall in love with him. She turned on the water and washed her hands. Kat knew she needed to take control. She had let people control her for too long. “I’ll tell Patricia to look for you.” Kat dried her hands and adjusted the phone. “Don’t say I didn’t warn you. I’ve sat through three months of acting classes. I can tell you that no Oscars will be won tonight.”
    “Great, I’ll see you then.”

J.J. walked into the school building, spotted Kat and stumbled. Fuck me. She’s gorgeous. Her black wrap blouse with hot pink trim highlighted her tits fabulously. Black jeans hugged all the right curves. Her sexy hot pink heels made his blood pressure rise. He smoothed his shirt and walked over to Ron and Patricia. “Hey.”
“Oh J.J.” Excitement gushed from Patricia. “I’m so happy you’re here.”
He sat and left an empty chair for Kat next to him.
Ron leaned over. “She is quite a sight, isn’t she?”
J.J. would examine the shock of jealousy he’d just experienced later. “She’s perfect.”
He heard Kat yell over the crowd. “Excuse me, will the parents of Jimmie Burnett please come backstage?”
A tall blonde stood and walked backstage, and a few minutes later, Kat found her seat and the lights dimmed. J.J. put his arm on the back of her chair. The hair on his arm stood up and his body tingled.
For days, he’d wanted to see and touch Kat. Now he had the chance and he was in the high school gym. The same place he kissed Molly Carpenter in the corner at his freshman semi-formal. Maybe he could get Kat in the corner and put that starry look in her eyes. Or better yet, he could see if Coach Jones still didn’t lock his door and he could do what he did with Amanda Swift. He shook his head. No, with Kat, I’ll take my time. Our first time will be in a soft bed, not on a dirty gym office floor.
Before J.J. knew it, the play was over. While he watched, Sam delivered his lines. He moved his arm around Kat’s shoulder and toyed with her hair. As he played with the fine strands, more and more electricity arced between them.
Kat rose, smoothed her blouse and turned. “I have to get backstage and start cleaning up.” She hugged Patricia. “I’ll be home in about two hours. Are you sure you don’t mind watching Sam?”
“Absolutely, we’ll spoil Sam with ice cream and get him ready for bed.”
    She hugged Ron goodbye.
J.J. yanked Kat into a hug. “You look great.”
She blushed, pulled away and a curl sprang loose over her forehead. “Thank you.” She glanced around.
Is she ashamed of me? He stepped back. “Sorry.”
Kat’s ocean colored eyes softened. “I don’t want you to be the topic of gossip.”
His hands itched to push the stray lock back behind her ear. He shoved his palms into his pockets. “Can I help you clean up?”
“We could always use an extra hand.”
A woman wearing a tiny tank top and tight jeans walked to them. “Who’s your friend, Kat?” Her New Jersey accent grated on his nerves.
Kat straightened and put her hands on her hips, “This is, um, my friend, J.J. Adams,” she stammered. “J.J., this is Melissa Green.”
Melissa grabbed his hand. “Oh you’re the landscape guy. I’ve heard so much about you. It seems like everyone I know uses you.”
He eyed Kat. Her narrow-eyed stare and red cheeks had J.J. biting back a smile. “I hope you’ve heard good things.” He released Melissa’s palm.
    “Oh yes. I need
