Chapter 1

New York City here I come! As I pinched pennies and saved up my salary that comes every two weeks from my work in a fast food joint in Deer Park, Wisconsin, the only dreams I had were those of the big apple. One day I will be a great star in the city that never sleeps! I will be a successful actress well known in the United States and all over the world, Kate thought to herself.

Kate Windsor! Five feet eight inches tall, red head with a figure that compliments her pretty face is known to aim high, but most times does not have what it takes to see her dreams through. Since she was a little girl, she had always been attracted to the glamorous life of movie stars; as far as she is concerned, she will make every effort to get there.

It is a well known fact that New York City is the place where most dreams come to die. It has shattered and broken more hearts than any other city, but, people keep on coming and trying. For Kate especially, it could very much lead to something totally different, simply because she believes in people. she trusts people a lot.

Kate arrived in New York City, after 21 years living in her native Wisconsin. After about 3 months trying to get noticed for movies or Broadway, she quickly learns that getting any acting gig, talk less of a Broadway role required serious talent.
To m ake ends meet, she took a job at a fast-food joint in the city. Working in a fast food restaurant was what Kate had hoped to avoid by moving to NY, but here we are again, Kate working at a fast food joint. “For now I’ll rather do that than go back home to Wisconsin and admit that I failed.”
“Two hamburgers, a large coke and one apple pie,” said the lady on the opposite side of the counter. “Does that complete your order?” Kate asked. She nodded yes. Kate left the front counter and went to the shelves behind me where freshly made burgers and fries were being pushed out. She grabbed a bag and started picking out the customer’s order and putting them in the bag. At that moment, Travis walked by and said “How are you doing today, Kate?”
Travis Degare who works as an assistant manager during the day; or as his shifts permits, and goes to photography school at night is one person who shares Kate’s dreams of making it in the movie business. Travis is total, good looking with an excellent physique. Looks a little like Tom Brady, only that he does not play for the Red Sox. In fact, he does not even like the Red Sox. Girls swarm all over him, but he is such a serious minded guy that he is not distracted easily.
“It’s not the end of the world Kate, don’t look so down. I’m sure one of these days something will come your way, he said. “Yeah, right! I can’t even get past the receptionist at any of the studios,” I replied.
“Yes you will, and when you do , during your very first shoot look for me. I’ll be the guy behind the second camera on your right, he said. “Well, I guess it doesn’t cost anything to dream big and have very big dreams Travis,” replied Kate.

And we did dream. On our days off, we would take a bus ride around the city going up to very wealthy neighborhoods and wondering what it would feel like to be successful and rich.
“One day, I’ll own one of the apartments in that building with a pool in my apartment. I heard there are swimming pools in those apartments even as high as on the 30 th floor,” Kate said, pointing to a luxury apartment high rise, located about a block from where we were standing.
“Of course there will be a swimming pool in your apartment. As a successful actress, you can more or less get whatever you want. Nothing is impossible, and in New York city anything can happen” Travis said with a smile on his face.
Kate inched closer to him.” I have almost given up the thought of ever making it in New York, but your enthusiasm and encouragement keeps me going.
