heavens.”
“But you said we were safe because this is holy ground. What if we just made it unholy?”
Blake cupped her jaw, his features softening. “We’re fine.” He silenced her attempted interruption with his thumb across her lips. “Payton. Trust me. We did a lot of things in here tonight, but with the way I feel about you, I can assure you none of it was the least bit unholy .” He kissed her. “But if it’ll make you feel better, I’ll double check the barriers I put up earlier—make sure they’re still in place.”
He gave her a stunning smile as he rose and headed into the darkness, the quiet press of his feet across the floor marking his movement. She stayed on the sleeping bag, rerunning his words in her head. Though she realized their heightened senses were likely to blame, she couldn’t rule out the idea that his intensions extended beyond the scope of their immediate problem. That he was here for more than just the chance to bring some old fantasies to life.
She drew a shaky breath. Good god, what have I gotten myself into.
She shook her head, looking up as Blake reappeared, reclaiming his spot beside her.
“All’s good. I laid down some more salt and touched up the pentacles. Nothing paranormal is getting in here tonight. Promise.”
He claimed her mouth with his, kissing any away residual doubts as he took them gently to the pad, snuggling her against him again. Shadows played at the edge of the circle of light, but she didn’t care. As long as Blake was there, his body curled protectively around hers, she knew nothing would hurt her. They were safe and with any luck, they’d be able to get rid of the ghost and see where this new development would take them.

    Chapter Six

Blake blinked, inhaling as he turned his head slightly, gazing at one of the church windows. A stream of muted light sparkled along the colored glass, a ribbon of yellow visible beyond the hills. He tried to shake some of the fuzziness from his head when Payton’s warm body snuggled into him.
He turned back, smiling as she moaned in her sleep, her head resting in the crook of his shoulder. They’d woken a few hours after their tryst, shivering from the cold. He’d unzipped one of the sleeping bags and thrown it over them, content to simply hold her as she slept. She’d kissed his chest and laid her head on him, draping part of her body across his. And while he’d never been one to cuddle before, with her it felt right.
The notion tumbled through his gut, and he closed his eyes as he recalled the previous night. He’d been caught up in the moment, his inhibitions lowered, and had all but confessed his love—a love he realized he’d been harboring for years. Now he understood why he’d never been able to make his scattered relationships work. He’d been hung up on his teenage crush.
He sighed. He could fight it all he wanted, but Payton Scott held his heart, and the sooner he made peace with that, the better. And hopefully, her little plea last night meant she felt more than just lust for him as well.
“You know, Blake, if you lay there making faces at nothing, I’m going to think you really are crazy. Or are you talking to more spirits?”
Her voice sent fiery embers skittering down his spine, and he tried to ignore the sudden hardening of his cock as he gave her a smile. Once hadn’t been enough, though he doubted a lifetime would. “You’d be wiser to go with the crazy scenario. I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before they haul me off in an oversized white jacket.” He reached for her waist, cupping her warm skin. “You sleep okay?”
She grinned at him, reaching under the sleeping bag and wrapping her fingers around his shaft. She gave him a squeeze. “Before or after we made love?”
Words stalled in his chest as she pumped him this time, making the tip tingle with need. He gritted his teeth, trying to focus on her face. “Either. Both.”
