soup?
âDo you know where Stanley lives?â Luke asked finally.
âNo. But App can give me directions.â
âItâs kinda off the beaten path,â App said. âStanley lives off a dirt road, off of another dirt road, way down past my house.â
âYou can tell me. I can follow directions pretty good.â Did they really didnât think she couldnât take directions? How hard could it be to find a dirt road?
Sam came out of the kitchen with a large carryout bag. âYou jest take this to him and tell him it should last him a couple of days. But if I was you, Iâd get olâ Luke here ta drive ya out thar. Ainât no tellinâ what in the world you might run into out thar in the boonies.â
âGuys, I can take care of myself.â
Sam wagged his head. âIt ainât got a thang in the world ta do with that. My Adela called me while I was back thar gettinâ this ready and I told her you was takinâ it out to Stanley and she said I was not to let you go alone. Under no circumstances were you to head out thar without Luke here drivinâ you.â He dropped his chin. âAnd if my Adela tells me that, then thatâs what I aim ta tell you.â
Montana would have protested and done exactly what she wanted. However, she glanced over at Luke, who gave her a what-are-you-afraid-of look. What was she afraid of? Nothing. She wasnât scared of him. She could let him drive her out there and it made no difference to her.
âLoad up then. What are we waiting on?â Taking the soup, she headed toward the door. When she got there, she turned and gave App and Sam warning looks. âBut you two better not make anything out of this little trip, other than me letting Luke take me out to Stanleyâs.â
Two sets of bushy brows rose to meet thinning hairlines despite both men trying their hardest to look innocent. She almost laughed, but one glance up at Luke and she scowled instead. The man was simply too good-looking for his own good. Okay, the man was too good-looking for her good. As he held the door open for her and she squeezed past him with the bag of soup, she reminded herself that she wasnât supposed to be thinking about how good he smelled, how good he looked or how nice he was going along with two old men with matchmaking on their minds.
Â
âItâs nice of you to take this out to Stanley.â Luke held the door of his truck open for Montana, and just naturally took her elbow to help her up into the seat.
âItâs the right thing to do.â
He liked that, he thought, as he closed the door and headed around to his side. He glanced toward the dinerâs big window and there stood Sam beside Appâs table. Both men were grinning like two kids thinking they were pulling a good one. He chuckled as he got behind the wheel.
âThey think theyâre so sneaky. Do you believe the story about Miss Adela calling?â Montana asked.
Luke started the truck and backed out before he answered. He wanted to get away from prying eyes.He had seen a few other eyes staring out windows, too. From over at the candy store. And he thought heâd seen Esther Mae looking out of Ashbyâs Treasuresâthe ladiesâ clothing store that was directly across the street from Samâs diner. Everyone in town would know about this little trip before they even made it out to Stanleyâs.
âIt sounded like something she might say, so it could be true. If not, Samâs getting pretty creative, isnât he?â
She laughed at that. âOh, yes, he is. So, is Stanleyâs place really that hard to find?â
âOh, yeah. The man lives down by the river, and you have to drive halfway across Texas as the crow flies to get there.â He grinned at her. âYouâll see. And youâll be glad you decided not to be scared of me and let me drive you.â
âI wasnât scared of
