kidneys.â
âGood thing itâs not a gonad then.â
âYou bet your ass,â Lula said.
I turned onto State Street. âJohnny Chucci and Zero Slick are in the wind. Pick your poison,â I said. âWhoâs first on our list?â
âI got a real interest in Zero Slick. He looks like an unpleasant chubby little nerd, but he picked himself an excellent name. Heâs like an enigma, right?â
I thought he was more loser than enigma but hell, who am I to judge.
âWe havenât got much to go on with him,â I said. âHe doesnât have an address, but he seems to have a neighborhood. I guess we could ride around the building he blew up and see if we get lucky.â
I was a block away when Connie called me.
âIâm listening to the police band, and a call just came in about a boa spotted on the three hundred block of Pilkman Street,â Connie said. âPilkman backs up to the patch of woods by Diggeryâs double-wide. If you hurry you could get there ahead of animal control.â
I made an instant U-turn. âIâm on it.â
âIâm not on it,â Lula said. âIâm not in favor of this. Suppose itâs Ethel? Then what? You gonna escort her into your Mercedes and put a seatbelt on her? You gonna talk her into turning around and following you through zombie country, back to Diggeryâs place?â
âIâll think of something.â
âWe donât even have any snake-catching equipment with us. We donât have one of those loop things you see on the nature channel. We donât have no rats or chickens or roadkill to feed it. We donât got a snake cage. I donât even know what a snake cage looks like. The snakes at the zoo are behind glass.â
âIâll stun-gun her.â
âSay what?â
âIâll zap Ethel with my stun gun, load her into the back of the SUV, and take her home to Diggeryâs double-wide.â
âAre you nuts?â
âIt could work.â
âWhat about salmonella?â Lula said. âYou could get salmonella from touching a snake.â
âI have hand sanitizer in my messenger bag.â
SEVEN
LULA WAS ON the alert when I turned onto Pilkman.
âThereâs three women standing on the sidewalk on the next block,â she said. âIâm guessing theyâre snake watching.â
I parked near the women, and Lula and I got out. A huge snake was curled up on a patch of grass that served as front yard to a modest bungalow.
âWhat do you think?â I asked Lula. âIs that Ethel?â
âHard to tell,â Lula said. âLast I saw her she was draped in a tree.â
âItâs a boa,â one of the women said. âWe looked it up.â
âHave you ever seen this snake around here before?â I asked her. âDoes anyone in this neighborhood own a snake?â
Everyone shook their head. No one had seen the snake before today.
âHey! Ethel!â Lula shouted at the snake.
We all took a step closer and looked to see if there was any response.
âIt opened an eye,â Lula said. âThatâs Ethel all right.â
âIs Ethel your snake?â the woman asked.
âShe belongs to someone we know,â Lula said. âAnd Stephanie here is responsible for bringing her home.â
âItâs an awfully big snake,â one of the other women said.
âYeah, but Stephanieâs got a plan,â Lula said. âSheâs gonna load Ethel into the back of her car. I know that Mercedes looks like a luxury vehicle, but itâs got some muscle, and if we keep Ethel all curled up, weâre pretty sure sheâll fit.â
My heart was beating with a sickening
thud
. I was terrified of Ethel. And I was repulsed at the thought of touching her.
Okay, I told myself. Attitude adjustment needed. Sheâs a pet. Sheâs had a big adventure, and
