rehearsal wearing a wire. So did Chief Pritchard, who would be on stake out outside the amphitheater.
The place was packed with squealing teens and pretty women. It was Decadent & Deadly’s first open rehearsal in their home city. At least, the first of this magnitude. It was part of a promo campaign to kick off their first upcoming tour, which they were doing without a recording contract in order to get their demo out there.
Sure, Shane had connections in the music business thanks to his dad, but Hunter had told Sally that Shane didn’t want to use them too much. He wanted to achieve success in the music business on his own merit. However, their dad had invested heavily in this tour, and Hunter told her Shane was super stressed over the pressure to make their dad proud.
“See anything yet?” Hunter’s voice crackling through her earpiece startled Sally.
She glanced around at the crowd, scanning it intensely while she tried to appear like a nonchalant observer. “Nothing.”
Trent Farrow, her no-good ex-boyfriend should be showing up soon, though.
“Try closer to the stage,” Hunter suggested, and Sally made her way through the throng of tight jean clad girls clustered around the area.
Shane spotted her and waved. He was near his drum kit, talking to someone. The little bit she knew about bands, concerts, and rehearsal, she figured it was his drum tech. He excused himself from the short, older man with a long bristly grey beard that reached to his belt buckle. Then he hopped down from the stage and made his way toward her.
Sally’s heart sped up. She forced a smile and whispered into her hidden mic. “Your brother’s coming over.”
Hunter sighed. “Great. Shane has some timing.”
“I’ll get rid of him. Don’t worry.”
Shane bounced over to her in a shiny black t-shirt and pleather pants. He twirled a drum stick and blew his sandy blond hair out of his eyes. Sweat beaded his brow, made his honey tanned skin shine, and his razor cut shag stuck to his forehead.
    “Hey, what’re you doing here?”
She gave him a wide smile while still trying to surveil. “It’s my day off. Hunter said you and the band were having this open rehearsal, so here I am.”
“Yeah, it’s kind of a pre-party before the big party next Saturday.” Hunter referred to Decadent and Deadly’s upcoming concert.
“Cool.” Just as the word left her lips, she saw Trent Farrow, their quarry, heading backstage with some guy who looked like a roadie.
And then fate played the cards in her favor.
“Hey, let me show you around backstage!” Shane took her hand before she could accept or decline and dragged her toward where Trent had disappeared.
Hunter spoke low through the earpiece. “Don’t go back there with him, Sally. He’s just on the make, like he always is.”
Sally freed herself from Shane’s grip and said sweetly, “One sec. I just have to go to the bathroom.”
    “Oh, there’s a bathroom backstage.”
She was already jogging toward the lobby. “I’ll be right back.”
“Good one,” Hunter chuckled over the wire.
“I’m going backstage with him,” Sally said into the mic, after making sure she was alone in the public restroom.
    “What?”
“I just saw Trent going backstage. It’s the perfect opening.”
Hunter paused and his silence told her he wasn’t cool with this, but he wouldn’t hold her back when a conviction of her ratbag ex was on the line. She knew this.
“Okay,” he said finally, his tone flat. “Go ahead.”
She ran back to where Shane waited. He smiled as he held out a hand to her. She marveled, as he led her backstage, how two identical twins like Shane and Hunter could be so different. Hunter was brooding and very internal about everything. Shane was a bouncing ball of enthusiasm from what she’d seen so far. She wondered if he hid secrets behind his smile, like his brother did behind his stoicism?
Just as they neared Shane’s dressing room, she spotted Trent talking
