more she realized she had never surrendered anything to him. She’d used Dylan to beat up on herself at perceived failures. That ended now.
As she dressed for the evening, she fingered the collar on her dresser. It was a thick chain of shining gold with dangling emeralds that brushed the swell of her breasts teasingly. Diamonds were scattered throughout, making the piece glitter under the lights like it was wrapped in stars. It was a truly beautiful collar. One she knew she would cherish.
Nicholas had taken her home for the first time in a week. Funny, it no longer seemed like her home. This was the old Tawni . She was a new woman inside and out, though she was only now beginning to realize just how different.
In the week she’d spent with Niko and the boys, she’d begun to think of her life as being part of a team. Like SWAT, there were the five of them together, relying on each other with Nicholas in charge. It wasn’t like anyone was bossy or anything--they simply looked to Niko for things like tonight. He said it was time to do this in public, and no one questioned his judgment.
Surprisingly, Tawni had responded to all of it. She was her own woman, but she found she liked relying on all the guys sometimes. Not just Nicholas. Understanding that about herself didn’t necessarily mean she was letting someone rule her life, but she did enjoyed just laying in front of the TV watching a movie with them while one or more of them stroked her body into a gooey puddle of relaxation. Since that one encounter, however, none of them had tried anything other than stealing a kiss or swatting her ass from time to time as they played. Played ! How long had it been since she’d felt free enough to actually play?
Tonight, however, wasn’t about play. They would take her to the place she’d hoped never to go again. After that last night with Dylan, she never wanted to see the inside of another BDSM club. Instead, she now found herself clasping a corset to her chest while she called for Niko to lace her up.
“Are you okay?” His voice was gentle, soothing. So different from the commanding tone he normally used, the one that said she better get her ass in gear and her head in the game.
Tawni would never think of lying to Nicholas now. Never try to hide her feelings from him at all. That only kept him from doing what she needed.
“Yes. I’m just nervous. Maybe even a little scared.”
    “If you’re not ready—”
“No!” She looked over her shoulder at him, making eye contact so he knew she was sincere. “I’m ready. I trust you and the others with my life.”
    “And your heart?”
Trust Nicholas to cut to the chase.
“I’m getting there,” she answered honestly. “Quicker than I should, but I simply can’t resist you guys.”
That got a chuckle as he tied off her corset. “I’ll leave you to finish getting ready,” he said, giving her a lingering look so filled with heat Tawni’s toes curled. Though she understood the reasons for going back to the club, she still wanted to spend the night at home with her cops. There were so many things she wanted to do with the four of them. So damned many things she wanted them to do with her. Even now, she had a surprise for them, but that would come later. If she made it through the first part of the night, that is. She’d just have to rely on the guys, lean on them as much as she needed to, and they would get her through whatever she had difficulty with.
Taking care with her hair, she decided to wear it up. Intricate braids held the long, glossy locks in place, revealing the long line of her neck. With trembling fingers, she reached for the collar Nicholas had given her, fastening it securely around her throat. The sparkling emeralds were a lovely contrast to all the black of her outfit and hair.
In addition to the collar and corset, she wore black leather, form-fitting pants that laced from ankle to waist, and four-inch heels. As she checked her appearance in
