plan."
It was past midnight and the house was silent. Alex was downstairs working in his study and I was climbing the steps to the library, intent on finding a good book to pass the time. As great as it was that I didn't need to sleep, it sure left a whole lot of downtime with nothing to do. I perused the shelves, my hand coming to rest on a thick hardback book about Lady Jane Grey. I pulled it off the shelf as an easy choice. I was just turning away from the bookshelf when a bright flash of light overtook me and, losing my balance, I crumpled to the ground. Visions assailed me at a speed that left the images almost indistinguishable. I was assaulted with images of bloody, matted blonde hair, a rolling green countryside, a choppy gray harbor just before dusk, and flashes of other things I couldn't make out. With a kaleidoscope of images still swirling before my eyes, I felt strong hands lift me up, cradling me and then placing me on a soft bed. When the visions finally cleared from my eyes, I saw Alex's concerned face leaning over me.
Looking nearly terrified, he asked, "Brooke, are you okay? What happened?"
I raised a hand to my forehead, massaging a temple. "More visions. Like the ones I first had before I was changed." I looked into his vivid blue eyes. "These were awful, though. Bloody and gory and had such a feeling of dread with them. I'm afraid they're foreshadowing something truly terrible."
"Are you sure? Maybe it's just the stress of everything you've been through lately." He nodded to himself, as if determining that had to be the cause. "Yes, you've been under entirely too much stress. Maybe we do need to get away for awhile. We'll take security with us, just in case. And it'll throw Lucien off of your trail for awhile. Maybe he'll give up and go home. Or, Regency be damned, maybe I just need to destroy him and call it a day."
I shook my head. "No, really, it's okay. You're right. I'm probably just a little overwhelmed. I‘ll be fine."
"Brooke. I'm not taking no for an answer. I'll book something tonight and we'll leave tomorrow. Get packed. We're finally going on our honeymoon."
CHAPTER 11
As I stood at the floor to ceiling windows of our penthouse room, overlooking the bright, colorful lights and flashing signs of the city, I looked back at Alex excitedly. Las Vegas, where we could stay up all night and stay in all day; and nobody would think twice about it. Perfect. Alex walked up behind me, slipping his arms around my waist and leaning down to say lightly in my ear, "I can't decide. Take you out and show you off, or stay here and show you an even better time."
"Hmm, I say we do both. And start with the latter first."
A sharp knock at the door caused me to jump, and reluctantly pulling away, Alex strode over to the door and opened it. Chaz stood at the entrance. His intimidating size and constant scowl would deter even the worst criminals, but they didn't fool me one bit. He was really just a huge teddy bear. At least to us. Our enemies saw a different side of him. Chaz glanced quickly at me and Alex stepped outside shutting the door gently behind him.
I chewed my lip in frustration. They were always trying to protect me from whatever came up. All they accomplished was letting my imagination run away from me, probably building it up worse than it was. Clearly, something was up or Chaz never would have interrupted us. It seemed our plans of a relaxing honeymoon were coming to an end before it could even get started.
I listened as their footsteps got further away and grabbed my phone before collapsing on the giant bed. Scrolling through my contacts, I decided to give Anna a call to let her know where Alex had taken me. After getting her voicemail,
