Lucy to the closet. Lucy opened the door and pulled out a large doll.
âThis is Tyler,â she said proudly. She sat down and placed the doll in her lap.
Savannah studied the strange doll. Its black hair was cropped short and was longer on one side than the other. Its clothes were a little too big. And its eyes. Its eyes were blue.
âHe does look like Tyler,â Savannah told Lucy.
âI made him,â Lucy explained. âI told Tyler I wanted a boy doll, but he always brought me girl dolls. So I cut off this dollâs hair. And one day when Mrs. Mooreland made blueberry cobbler, I stole some juice and painted the eyes blue.â
âThat was very clever,â Savannah said, impressed by Lucyâs efforts.
âAnd I snuck into the attic and found some of the clothes Tyler wore when he was tiny,â she said. Her eyes gleamed. âDonât tell Tyler. He doesnât like me sneaking though the house.â
Savannah smiled. âSince youâre keeping my secret about the dress, itâs only fair that I keep your secret about the doll.â
âI like sharing secrets,â Lucy whispered. âSomeday I will tell you all the secrets.â
â¦Â â¦Â â¦
Secrets, Savannah thought as she left Lucyâs room and crossed the hall. When I was Lucyâs age, I lovedsecrets too. But I shared all my secrets with Victoria.
She opened the door to her room and froze. Victoria stood beside her bed, slipping something beneath her pillow.
âVictoria, what are you doing?â Savannah demanded.
Victoria jumped away from the bed. âNothing.â
Savannah crossed the room in quick strides. She grabbed her pillow and lifted it.
Tiny dots of blood stained the pillow. And in the center rested something wet and spongy. A tiny eyeball!
âOh, Victoria, what have you done?â Savannah asked. She couldnât tear her gaze from the dark brown eye.
âItâs a hawkâs eye,â Victoria explained. âIt will protect you from the evil.â
âI donât need protection!â Savannah snapped. She snatched up the eye, shuddering as its coldness seeped into her palm.
âNo!â Victoria cried.
Savannah threw the eye into the fire. It hissed and sizzled. Good, Savannah thought.
Savannah wiped her hand on the pillowcase. Then she pulled off the case and tossed it on the floor.
âVictoria, you must stop this,â Savannah demanded. Then she looked closely at her sister for the first time since she entered the room.
Savannahâs anger drained away. âYour hair,â she gasped. âVictoria, what happened to your hair?â
A thick white streak ran through Victoriaâs brown hair.
Victoria sank onto the bed, pressing her hands against her face. âItâs the evil,â she murmured. âThe evil in this house is powerful. It did this to me.â
My poor sister, Savannah thought. She knelt in front of Victoria. âSome women get white hair at our age. Remember Mrs. Speergen?â
âNo! Itâs the evil. I felt its cold touch during the night.â
âThe fire in your hearth must have gone out,â Savannah insisted. Everything has an explanation, Savannah thought. Everything.
âAll this black doesnât help either,â Savannah said. âThat will be our first jobâredecorating the whole house. Weâll start with your room. When weâre done, Blackrose Manor will be as cozy and warm as Whispering Oaks.â
âNo!â Victoria stood and began pacing. âYou donât understand. If we stay here, one of us will die! Die, Savannah.â
She is so frightened. She wants to leave so desperately, Savannah realized. What would she do to convince me to leave the manor? Would she destroy the dress Tyler gave me?
Savannah rose and walked to her closet. She pulled out the ruined dress. âVictoria, did you do this?â she asked gently. âDid you hope
