She saw Melina move from the shadows towards her customer and she gave Kalliope a small wave. Kalliope licked her lips and teased her waiting customers, playing with them as she tried to make the decision of whom she would bed next.
She finally settled on a general, and she grasped his hand before leading him back to her room. This time she was ready to submit to her master.

Kalliope cracked open her eyes and rolled over. It was dark in her room, but she knew that the sun must be up now. She yawned and tried to fall back asleep. She had been up late into the night, pleasing her new clients. The soreness between her legs let her know that she had taken one too many customers, but she had been eager to make her name at Hera Selene.
Sighing, she pushed off her covers, knowing that she would not fall back asleep. She sat up and pushed her hair out of her face. Yawning, she rose and pulled a cloak over her dressing gown. She slipped out of her room and caught the smell of something delicious cooking wafting in the air. She made her way towards the dining room, where a few other women were eating their breakfast.
Breakfast was a loose term. Judging by the light, Kalliope assumed it was mid-day. A young, feisty woman with bouncy dark curls grinned at Kalliope.
“Looks like it was a good night for you!”
Kalliope grinned back and ducked her head. “Yes.”
“Don’t be shy! The men loved you! I think you had the best first night on record!” The woman paused. “I’m Harmena. You’re Kalliope, right?”
    “Yes. Nice to meet you.”
Harmena smiled again as she stuffed a huge bite of egg into her mouth. Kalliope guessed that Harmena was near her age. She was one of the younger girls that Kalliope had seen at Hera Selene.
“How long have you been here?” Kalliope couldn’t help ask.
Harmena grabbed her plate and cup and sat directly next to Kalliope. It was a friendly gesture.
“My parents both died when I was sixteen. I lived with my aunt for a few years and a nobleman discovered me. He offered me a new life, and I gladly accepted. I came here when I was nineteen.” She paused. “It’s been four years now.”
So, Harmena was only a few years older.
    “What’s your story, new girl?”
Kalliope sighed. “It’s a bit of a long story. I worked in a brothel in the north and a soldier found me. I grew up in that brothel, but I had only worked as a prostitute for the past two years. The owner was good to me,” she explained. “The soldier brought me here two days ago. I’m still adjusting.”
Harmena grinned conspiratorially. “Stay away from Iole,” she whispered, pointing to a haughty woman at the far end of the table. “She’s a bitch. And watch out for Leda,” she continued, nodding her head at another woman. “She sleeps with the men, but she prefers the women. She’ll try to soap you up in the baths.” Harmena gave Kalliope a pointed look. Kalliope looked at Harmena in shock.
“You have a lot to learn,” she laughed, rolling her eyes. “Come on! Eat your breakfast, and I’ll show you around. I promise it will be better than Melina’s tour.”
“How do you know Melina gave me a tour?”
Harmena rolled her eyes again. “I make it my business to know everything here!”
Kalliope devoured her breakfast and then hurried after Harmena. “Shouldn’t we get dressed?” she asked.
“For what? We don’t have to work for hours!”
Kalliope realized Harmena was right, and she spent the next three hours learning all the ins and outs of Hera Selene. Kalliope had to admit that Harmena’s tour was a lot more informational, not to mention more practical, than Melina’s. Kalliope learned where to find extra food, who to avoid, quiet places for reading and meeting friends, and even where to find a stash of sexual props should she so desire.
“I’m hungry again,” Harmena admitted, after she had shown Kalliope her room. It was only one
