get lost if he heads out there himself.”
“And he’ll let you run ahead of him just to show him the way, right? Not so he can watch your butt in those tiny running shorts of yours?”
“Gram-Marie! He’s as much as told me I’m too fat, already. Why on earth would he want to watch my butt? It’s about two to three times as big as the ones on the bony babes he’s used to back in Hollywood.”
“I suppose you’re right,” Marie said as she turned to empty the cut veggies into the pot. “Still…” She winked at Veronica who stuck out her tongue at her.
They worked in companionable silence for a few minutes. Marie shot a glance over at Veronica who was smiling as she worked and she couldn’t resist adding, “He did seem really interested in whether or not you were in the kitchen yesterday when he walked in for breakfast.” Veronica’s eyebrows rose. “I’m just saying…”
“Gram-Marie! You just stop that line of thinking right now! I’m going to run with him to help him get into better shape. The way he looks now even an Oscar-winning actor wouldn’t be able to convince folks he’s a pioneer of the north woods. He certainly doesn’t have that kind of talent. Let’s just hope that if he works out for the next few weeks, Jared will have something to work with when he gets here.”
Marie shrugged. “Fine. Anything you say, Ronnie. I did notice that Jake’s car drove in about midnight last night. Our guest must have figured he needed to miss the last call if he was going to be getting an earlier start to his days.”
Veronica carried the apple pies over to the oven and slid them in after she pulled out the already-baked bottom crusts she would fill with the blueberry glacé.
“If he’s eating now, he’s going to have some time to kill while the apple pies bake and I fill these crusts. Maybe I’ll nip out there and let him know what time we’ll be running.”
Marie pretended not to notice when Veronica glanced quickly at herself in the mirror next to the door leading out of the kitchen before she pushed it open.
“Uh, hmm,” she said and hummed as she smiled, stirring the veggies into the broth.
Veronica didn’t see Raul right away until she glanced toward the deck and saw him sitting at the same table as yesterday morning.
“Hi, I see you’re taking my advice and eating before we run,” she said conversationally as she leaned against the railing. She took a sip of the coffee she’d poured on the way by the pot.
He nodded. “Yes and I already had two cups of coffee. I’m going to need time to digest this before I can run.” He looked at her flour-dusted apron over her jeans. “You’re not ready yet, are you?”
She shook her head, smiling, “No. I just put the apple pies in the oven but I’ve got to make the glacé for the blueberry pies. By the time the apples are done, I’ll have the glacé made so I can assemble them and put the blueberry ones in the fridge. Then I’ll change and we can go.”
“So you figure about an hour or so?”
“Yup.”
“Good. I still remember most of what the personal trainer taught me to do when I was bulking up to play the secret agent in Avenge . I’m going to get started on a regimen of sit-ups, push-ups, jumping jacks and twisting lunges. I don’t want to over-do it today, but I’ve got to start somewhere. Then after we run I’ll do some stretching, swimming with you, then yoga to cool down.”
“Wow! You might not be awake when Jake comes to drive you into town to hit the bars. Maybe you’d better leave a note on the door telling him to knock extra-loudly.”
“Ha-ha. We’ll see. I may just cut down to only alternate nights in town, since I’ll be getting up so early in the day. Or come home earlier. But I’ve got a reputation to maintain and even up here, people notice I’m out in public having a good time. There were a couple of pictures of me in this week’s on-line People , showing me playing pool at the
