For the Love of His Life
Crossroads. The tag-line said I was getting into the spirit of the north woods to get ready for my next big hit. It’s nice to know that I’m still newsworthy, though I wonder how much my agent had to pay to get someone to fly up here to take some pictures.”
Veronica shrugged. “Well I’ve got those pies to finish and you’ve got some exercising to do. See you out back by the lake in about an hour, okay?”
“Okay. I’ll be all hydrated and ready to go.”
He watched her as she walked back into the kitchen.
What a nice ass. It’s going to be a pleasure running behind that, as long as I can keep Big Rod from poking out the bottom of my running shorts. Hmm, I wonder what she would do if that happened? He spent a few minutes imagining that scene before deciding he needed to think about something else.
He got up and headed out the door to walk quickly back to his cabin, having the one smoke he was allowing himself to have before running. He changed into running shorts and a tee-shirt, taking a second to admire himself in the mirror. Then he began to do the endless repetitions that the sadistic trainer had insisted he memorize. He’d written them down so he didn’t miss any muscle groups.

An hour later, Veronica dropped a couple of towels on the rock she used as her table out by the lake. She leaned forward to get all of her hair over her head, then put it into the elastic to keep it out of her eyes while she ran. She didn’t hear Raul coming up behind her, but she felt him watching her as she quickly straightened up and turned to face him.
Raul was drinking from a water bottle as he rounded the tree that had blocked his view of his running partner until he was almost on top of her.
¡Dios mio! Holy fucking shit! Woman if you don’t shop bending over in front of me, I’m not going to be responsible for what happens! He cleared his throat to make speech possible. “Let me finish this bottle of water and we can get started.”
Veronica stared at him, nodding wordlessly. Oh my God! He’s so much better-looking in person than he is on the big screen! No wonder they have him taking his clothes off in so many movies! He’s got great legs and a mighty impressive package in the front of those shorts! He’s all sweaty with his shirt sticking to him already. And his shoulders are so wide…where did those muscular arms come from? Lifting heavy beer glasses? I wonder if I can get him to run in front of me for a while, so I can see if his ass is as nice as the front of him.
Veronica cleared her throat. “Yeah, sure. You don’t look like you need to do any stretching before we head out and I was just finishing mine.”
Raul gulped the last of his water, capped the bottle and tossed it near the rock that held the towels.
    “Let’s do this.”
Veronica smiled at him and began to trot along the path that led to the cabins. Raul followed her closely, but was so busy studying the rounded globes of her butt that he almost missed her turning off onto a trail he hadn’t noticed before. She picked up speed as they ran down an incline, and Raul fought against his body’s inclination to want to stop this foolishness and have a smoke. Gamely, he kept up with her for the entire run, slowing down and speeding up when she did.
When they emerged almost two hours later and slowed down to walk back to the lakeshore, Raul had to stop a few times to cough violently and spit onto the ground. He panted, his face dark red and his legs trembling visibly.
“Are you alright?” Veronica asked. “I tried to take it easy for your first day out, but today’s Friday and I usually do my longer runs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.”
Raul nodded before being overcome by another fit of coughing. He waved towards the water, “I’ll feel better once I’ve cooled down. Last one in is a rotten egg!”
They raced to the water and threw themselves into it. Veronica was prepared for how cold it was going to feel. Raul was
