first.â He starts to dictate, âSign below ifââ
Harper shakes his head. âYou donât say it like that.â
âFirst you donât want to do the petition. Now youâre the fucking expert,â says Drumgold. âWhat do you mean, you donât say it like that?â
âYou say: âWe, the undersigned,ââ says Harper. âI know âcos Dadâs done petitions.â
âOkay. âWe, the undersigned, want to go on Back River beachâââ
ââWant
access to
Back River beach...â Sounds better.â
ââ
Demand
access to Back River beach.ââ
Harper pauses his writing. âThatâs a bit strong, isnât it?â
âDo you want it to sound weak? Read what weâve got so far.â
Harper reads, ââWe, the undersigned, hereby demandâââ
âWhere did âherebyâ come from?â
âYou always say âhereby.ââ
âWhy?â
âI donât know. You just do.â Harper starts again. ââWe, the undersigned, hereby demand access to Back River beach.ââ
He looks up at Drumgold.
Drumgold looks at Isora, who has taken paper and markers from Harperâs backpack and is working on a poster. âIs?â
âNo-oneâs going to know whoâs doing the petition.â
âThatâs the idea,â says Drumgold. âThen the police wonât be coming after us.â
âBut Isoraâs right,â says Harper. âThereâs always something on the petition to say whoâs doing it â the union, or the welfare committee, or whoever.â
âWe need a name for ourselves,â says Isora. âLike...the Society to Free the Beach!â
âThe Society for the Liberation of the Beach,â Harper suggests.
ââSocietyâ makes us sound like a bunch of old ladies,â says Drumgold. âHow âbout the Organisation for the Liberation of the Beach?â
âToo business-y,â says Isora.
âThe
Front
for the Liberation of the Beach,â says Harper triumphantly.
Drumgold and Isora stare at him.
âBrilliant,â says Drumgold. âWhere dâyou get âFrontâ from?â
âMust be something I read for social studies,â says Harper.
Drumgold proclaims, âThe Front for the Liberation of the Beach. Put that at the top of the page. No. Put it underneath where you sign, and write it as an acronym at the top.â
âAs a what?â
âJust the initials. Put them at the top of the page. Now read what weâve got.â
Harper starts, âT-F-F-T-L-O-T-B.â
âWhat the hellâs that?â says Drumgold.
âWhat the hellâs what?â
âT-F-F-T-L... and all that.â
âItâs the ac...acro...the initials.â
âYou use just the main words for an acronym, dummy. âFrontâ and âLiberationâ and âBeach.â Try again.â
Harper grumbles, âHow am I supposed to know that?â He reads, ââWe, the FLB, herebyâââ
Isora interrupts, âWait.â
âNow what?â says Harper.
âFLB is boring. Letâs be just the Back River Front, and weâll write the acronym using the âBâ
and
the âAâ from âBack,â as well as the âRâ and the âF.ââ
Drumgold grins. âBARF! Perfect! And it says how we feel about Anderson taking over the beach. Go on then, Harp.â
Harper starts again. ââBARF. We, the undersigned, hereby demand access to Back River beach.ââ He looks up from his paper and adds, âIâve left space for people to sign. Then at the bottom Iâve got Back River Front.â
Isora holds up her work. Thereâs a sketch of the beach at the bottom of the page, with shaded lettering stating Back River Front, as if itâs
