want to hurt you.â
âI appreciate that.â
âYou have to leave,â she said.
Again she gave me the chance to walk away.
âHe took everything. My husband and my children. And now Iâm going to take all that he has left, his life.â
âI was there at Olde Burnham,â I said. âIf it was my family, Iâd want to do the same thing. I understand.â I paused. âBut I canât just leave. I canât let you do it.â
âYou think he deserves to live?â Suddenly her voice wasnât so calm, and for an instant she turned my way and the pistol was aimed at me. I felt a rush of panic and I had to fight to keep that fear from overwhelming me. She turned the gun back on Quinn.
âItâs not for me to decide if he should live,â I said. âOr for you either.â
I stepped back into her line of fire. Behind me I heard the prisoner breathe in sharply. What was I doing?
âYouâd risk your life to protect him?â Paula demanded.
I shook my head. âIâd risk my life for you, Paula. If you kill him, how would you live with yourself?â
âI wasnât planning on living. Do you think thereâs only one bullet in this gun?â
That should have been obvious to me. She wasnât leaving this room alive either. That was all part of the plan.
âLook, like I said, if I were you, Iâd be feeling the same thing. Maybe it would be me standing there with a gun,â I said. âIâd just hope that somebody was here to talk me out of it. If Iâd lost everybody in my family like that Iâd want to die, but I know thatâs not what theyâd want. Itâs not what your family would want. Youâre all thatâs left. What do you think theyâd want you to do?â
Her lower lip started to quiver.
âYou need to honor them by living,â I said.
âI donât want to live,â she said, her voice practically a whisper. She started to cry.
âYou have to keep going ⦠for them. Besides, if you did kill this man youâd be no better than him, no better than his kind. Weâre better ⦠youâre better.â
She lowered the pistol and started sobbing. As she dissolved, I rushed forward, taking the gun and holding her, stopping her from falling to the floor. At that same instant, Herb and Stewart rushed into the room, along with another guard. Stewart and the guard took Paula and led her from the room. Herb took the gun, and I felt my legs get rubbery and weak. I practically collapsed into the chair.
âThat should never have happened,â Herb said. âAdam, Iâm so sorry.â
âItâs okay,â I mumbled.
Quinn gasped. âThat kid saved my life!â He turned directly to me, staring me in the eyes. âWhy did you do that?â
I shook my head. âI couldnât let her kill you.â
âIf it was me, I would have walked away,â he said.
âI doubt that, Quinn.â
âI still donât believe it,â he said. âYou risked your life to save mine.â
âItâs not a big deal,â I mumbled. The blood was still pulsing through me so strongly that I could hear my heart beating in my ears.
âYou probably should have left,â Herb said. âYou shouldnât have risked your life for him.â
âItâs good that he did,â Quinn said. âGive me those plans. Iâm going to tell you what you need to know.â
âReally?â I asked.
âI owe you that much.â
Herb took the plans from the table and handed him a pen. âJust mark them in, label them. I want the doctor to look at Adam.â
âIâm fine.â
âNo youâre not. Youâre as white as a ghost. Come on.â
He offered me a hand and I gladly took it. As he helped me to my feet, my legs were still shaking. All of me was shaking. We started to walk
