sure.â
The phone rang beside the sofa, breaking into Nancyâs thoughts.
âHi, detective,â the friendly voice said on the other end of the wire. âGlad I caught you.â
Nancyâs fingers tightened on the receiver. âDid you get my transmission this morning, Dirk?â she asked tightly.
âYou bet I did.â There was a suppressed excitement in Dirkâs voice. âWe donât have anything on the print yet, but Iâve got a positive on the photo for you.â
âAlready?â Nancy exclaimed. âThatâs super!â
âYour boy was involved here in Fort Lauderdale with a girl named Darla DeCamp,â Dirk said. âShe was on a missing persons list up your way until a couple of weeks ago.â He paused.
âDarla?â Nancy asked. It was the name on the love note in Mikeâs pocket! They were getting closer. âYou said she was on a missing persons list. What happened? Has she been found?â
âYeah, she was found,â Dirk said. His voice was grim. âShe turned up in a lake outside of Batesvilleâdead.â
Chapter
Nine
N ANCY GASPED, HER fingers frozen on the telephone. Darlaâdead? This was something she hadnât expected. Had Darla drowned accidentallyâor by some other means? Nancy thought immediately of the scented note in Mikeâs pocket. âI pray that weâll never be separated,â the girl had written lovingly.
Nancy bit her lip, her thoughts racing. âHave the police established a cause of death?â she asked, her voice strained.
âNot yet,â Dirk said. âThe case must still be openâthey havenât put out a warrant. Where are you in your investigation?â
âIâve uncovered a couple of things that connect Mike McKeever to Batesville.â Quickly, Nancy told Dirk about the ticket stub and the love note from Darla. âAnd Ned and I discovered a lead today to a girl in Silver Hills,â she said. âItâs beginning to look as though Mikeâs romancing these girls for their money. Itâs romantic extortion. The question is, what next? Does he murder them to keep them quiet, once heâs got their money? Whatâs more,â Nancy continued, âIâm pretty sure Mike isnât in this alone. It looks like heâs got a partner. His name may be Felix.â
âYou seem to know more about this case than anybody else,â Dirk mused. âYouâd better watch yourself. These guys sound dangerous. If they figure youâre on to them, they might try to stop you.â
âI know,â Nancy said. âBut itâs not me Iâm worried about. Itâs the girl Iâm supposed to protectâBrenda Carlton. Sheâs about as flaky as they come, and headstrong, and thereâs no predicting what sheâll do. Sheâs so crazy about Mike, she might even try to help him get away.â
Dirk grunted. âSounds like a tough one, but youâre up to it. Iâll let you know the minute we turn up anything on that print.â
Nancy said goodbye and hung up. Just then the doorbell rang. It was George and Bess, in matching red jogging shorts and red sweatbands.
âHi,â Bess said breathlessly as Nancy opened the door. âWe were out runningâor I should say George was out running, and I was trying to keep upâand we thought weâd stop to hear what you learned in Silver Hills.â
âDid you uncover anything new?â George asked.
âYes,â Nancy said. âBut what we found out is pretty grim, Iâm afraid. Do you have time to discuss the latest?â
âListen,â Ned said, coming up behind Nancy, âItâs getting to be dinnertime. How about something to eat while we talk?â
âThatâs a good idea,â Nancy said, suddenly remembering that she and Ned had only had a quick sandwich for lunch.
âIâll go for
